Ambrose Bierce would have loved the similarities between current American and Iranian politics. Both presidents are negotiating a nuclear agreement so as to lower tensions, while powerful  -reactionary- conservative domestic forces do their double damnedest to scupper the understanding.

You might think that these folks want war. How about that?

I am watching "The Flight that Disappeared." I knew it was unbelievable when the flight attendants took the passengers' coats.

I've actually seen this happen, so I know it's real.

So what does happen when the renewable energy runs out?
Dean Burnett: Ukip recently asked a rather bizarre scientific question about renewable energies. But there’s no guarantee they’ll stop there

To my friends in warm climes: be glad you don't live in the northeastern US today, where snow, sleet, and freezing rain pelted us throughout the night. The pavements are covered with water, which, in a few hours, will freeze solid, and stay solid for weeks.

I cleared the roof and pavements (sidewalks to you Americans) as best I could, but I cannot clear the water. I wish that someone would invent a $10 low volume pump. 1 L/minute would do just fine.

Any takers?

For Sherlock Holmes, I will read the Telegraph.
Revealed for the first time, here is the short Sherlock Holmes story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in an effort to save his favourite bridge in Selkirk

Interesting, but it does not sound like Sir Arthur.

People in the midwest and north-east are better off than other US regions because as the Arctic air hits, those furthest south are the least prepared

It sure has. At least we have equipped ourselves for winter. Down south, not so much.

Winter storms also paralyze southern England. Nobody has the basics, not even snow shovels.

... and only cat lovers screen their windows, not to keep the flies out, but to keep the moggies in.

To butter tart, or not to butter tart, that is the question, and the answer is YES! They are huge, fresh, and utterly scrumptious, as are the eggs, potatoes, and all the rest. Meat-eating Americans (yes, there are other kinds) should try the peasmeal, about which my family waxed eloquent. The coffee is ample and delicious. Service is helpful and friendly. Eat here and leave happy. We did.

The Retreat was my home away from home when I worked in Reading. They serve great beer, and the hospitality is first-rate. I recommend that you stop in for a pint, and please have one for me when you do.
