Children's teeth rotting in the UK (https://goo.gl/pKwZhk)

When you think of #childhood hospital visits, you probably think of broken arms, asthma or allergies. According to a comprehensive recent study though, these tropes were dwarfed by the single biggest cause of kids' ER visits: oral health problems.

Tooth decay is the most common reason that children between five and nine need treatment in hospital, with 25,923 cases within this age group in 2016-17, up slightly from 25,875 the previous year.

Parents: do not slack on teaching your kids the right way to care for their teeth. The cost of failing to do so could be more serious than you ever imagined.

"Absolutely exceptional in every capacity" (https://goo.gl/FyKfPw)

The numbers don't lie. 130 years practicing #dentistry in #NYC. A 4.9/5 star average from 193 Google reviews. 4.5/5 from 124 Yelp! reviews. A 97.8% satisfaction rating across 179 comments on VerifiedReviews. But beyond the numbers, there are the words:

"I've used Yelp for the past year and haven't been compelled to write a review until now. There's a reason 209 NYC Dental is my first."

Mark M.

We feel confident proclaiming ourselves one of the leading dental practices in Midtown Manhattan because we've got the backup to prove it. If you want the best care in New York, 209 is the only number you need to remember.

That tongue "stuff"? It's called biofilm (https://goo.gl/cijx6t)

Q: What do you call a bacterial city?
A: A #biofilm.

These cities may not have mayors or sports teams, but they're fascinating examples that put the "culture" in "bacterial culture." You don't have to look far to find a biofilm either.

The gunk that accrues on the surface of your tongue is one example, but it's a city you'll want to evict from your body. You see, biofilms excrete polymers that block the antibodies in your saliva from breaking them down, which can create not only noxious breath but also harbor some dangerous bacterial intruders.

Give your tongue a good scrape down.

Foods that protect your teeth (https://goo.gl/myXWkz)

Okay, you're brushing, flossing and visiting the #dentist regularly. (You are, right?) But are you choosing the right foods to strengthen your teeth?

"It's not just sugar alone that causes cavities, it's the lack of nutrients that strengthen teeth," Dr. Lin says. "Malnutrition has become prevalent with the modern Western diet."

The most important nutrients for developing and maintaining healthy teeth are vitamins A, D, K2 and E. This article lets you know what food's carry these vitamins, so you know how to keep your mouth happy.

Your child in the dentist chair (https://goo.gl/xNvtZB)

Are you dreading introducing your #child to the #dentist? There's no getting around that it's something you need to do for them to ensure good oral health throughout life; but there's also no getting around the fact that some children take their sweet time getting accustomed to the idea.

It's not a poor reflection on your parenting, it's just kids. Take some comfort from this article from a mom about her dental problem child, and remember the key message: stick to it.

Someday they might even remember to thank you.

Great oral health advice for parents (https://goo.gl/Tm1iPB)

Community health organizations are an important plank helping immigrant and underprivileged families access #oralhealth services who might otherwise be left out in the cold.

They're also great starting points for finding accurate information on the latest guidelines from associations like the American Dental Association and the FDA. Try the link above for some good information from one such organization, First 5 LA, with links to useful guides on helping your kids keep their mouths clean, what to expect from their first dentist visits and much more!

How an NFL player-turned-dentist helped low-income families get dental care (https://goo.gl/J7t1xM)

John McKay Williams, DDS was one of the relatively few #dentists who was also a Super Bowl Champion as a lineman. Actually, scratch the word "relatively"; it's a short list by any comparison.

When he died, however, he was more celebrated for the work he had done to bring dental care to those who could not otherwise afford it. A dentist he inspired had this to say about his influence:

"You don't set up a shop in Edina [a prosperous Minnesota suburb] and expect everybody to drive, you know, 20 miles to come to the cure. You go right into the community where people live and bring the cure to them."

How one dentist changed an abuse survivor's outlook (https://goo.gl/RkxeX4)

#Dentistry is about more than just keeping a patient's mouth in good working order. When a person smiles, a genuine grin, you see something of their true nature.

That chance to connect with other people was taking away from Kyleigha Scott when an ex-partner headbutted her in the face while she slept on New Year's Eve. Her teeth were badly damaged, and she lacked the money to have them fixed. It changed the way she allowed herself to smile, until a simple act of kindness from a dentist changed everything.

Click for a heartwarming story.
