Are you writing your advertising "dumb" enough?

It may sound like a crazy, and yes somewhat insulting question, but I'm very serious. When you write the text for your ads are you thinking DUMB? Many of the 6,000+ advertisement messages each of us hear/see every day even a high school graduate can't completely comprehend or retain.
After working in the bio-tech and pharma sector for over 24 years, I have learned that the FDA recommends that we write our advertisements to the 5th grade level. That's right, 5th grade!! Age 10!
So, audit your last couple of ads. Count the number of sentences and the number of words with more than 3 syllables, if your ads have lots of either or both, chances are your ads are not working hard enough for you.
Moving forward keep grade level in mind, there are many pieces of literature that prove even college educated consumers comprehend and retain ads that are written more simply. The adage of Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) applies once again!
Here a just a few commonly used advertising words that may need some dumbing down. Please note: the words below will make you think I have lost it and everyone knows what “hosting” is etc. But I can tell from experience, it’s not true. Don’t assume they know anything. Also, this list is far from exhaustive but should give you a start.
1. Web Hosting
2. URL or Domain
3. Specificity
4. Differentiation
5. Loyalty
6. Copy (as when referred to as text)
7. Social Media
8. Tag
9. Key words
10. SEO and or SEM

"Differentiate or die" is a phrase that appears to have lost some traction but could be more relevant now then ever #Branding #Advertising
