There are a few things I count on: the sun rising in the east, the +Washington Capitals choking in the playoffs, and +Patrick Thomson writing brilliantly about anything, especially hip hop. He's done it again with an erudite, gorgeous take on Vince Staples' major-label debut "Summertime '06." Very much worth your time.

A little later than I'd have liked, but here's a review of +Merchandise's phenomenal sophomore effort, "After the End," out now on +4AD.

Definitely brings to mind Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears, the Church, and the Smiths, but remains an entirely original document, and a powerful one at that. Highly recommended. Basically the perfect album for the death of summer.
