In our 1st concert of the season we'll celebrate music written in and about our country. With the iconic Dvorak "American" quartet as centerpiece, we will explore a variety of folk, jazz, and modern American composers including Copland, Bernstien, Brubeck, and Gershwin. Even Debussy was inspired by American music. Check out our new striking poster by Radu Sava Visuals

Villa Lobos wrote this piece during a time when he had to compose mostly patriotic and propagandist works. It is evidence of the composer’s love of Bach expressed in the forms and nationalism of the Brazilian Chôros, a popular instrumental genre of the time. This music represents “the lush, fantastical, sensual, heartbreaking use of classical traditions to transport us to Brazil and universal truths of love, loss, and beauty.” Ken Freed. Featuring Marina Swales and myself. Please like, share or Subscribe to our channel for more videos!

Many thanks to everyone who came to our "Who was God's Fiddler' concert. Here is one of the highlights featuring Helen Graham and Ayke Agus. Program notes: The image of Orpheus pleading for the life of his deceased bride among the Spirits of the Underworld: how could it possibly be made more poignant than Gluck originally conceived it in his muted scoring for flutes and small ensemble? Only by rendering it as a solo voice on the violin, so tenderly characterized by Louisa May Alcott as “that most human of all instruments." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgjT6Z_MHso

In a time of continuing turbulence in our country, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Civil War poem from 1863 crying for peace still seems profoundly fitting. His work was set to music numerous times, but David Thorp's arrangement is the first version for string quartet that we know of. With music by Mark Hall and arrangement by David Thorp, this performance was part of our "A Classy Christmas" concert on December 4. Performed by Helen Graham, Kristen Autry, David Thorp, and Rebekah Hood Sava.

This Mozart overture – of the mood-setting genre- courses on an infectious gaiety and a rollicking rhythm which elicits the amateur conductor in anyone listening. Enjoy the conductor in you today through this video from our latest Veridian Symphony Orchestra concert!
