Please remember this when you're driving. This is a reason the MINIMUM recommended following "distance" is 2 seconds. And notice this is not in terms of a distance (like the often quoted "a car length for every 10 mph"), it is a time, which is this reaction time plus some time for the brakes to do their stopping job. Choose a fixed object (a signpost, a bridge, etc.), wait for the back of the vehicle in front of you to pass that object, start counting (maybe the popular "1001, 1002, 1003..."), and under **ideal** conditions, with you totally alert and concentrating intensely on driving, you should reach AT LEAST 2 seconds, if not more like 4. Add more seconds for impediments to stopping, like snow, rain, fog, etc.
