Own your logo. Even if it’s ugly. (And these weren’t.) Sticking to your logo gives it gravitas and respectability. Changing your logo makes you look like a fickle teenager.

(If your logo is racist, sexist, or otherwise bigoted, yes, please change it.)

It's petty, but I'll take it.

A compelling argument that “Baby It’s Cold Outside” isn’t rapey, although it does illustrate rape culture.

Today in pretentious word choices (and pointless Alan whinging): "Augean", as in "He wanted to demilitarize Soviet foreign policy so that he could divert resources to the Augean task of fixing a broken economy."¹

What does it mean? The OED says "Of a task, undertaking, etc.: requiring so much effort to complete as to seem impossible; very difficult or demanding." Merriam-Webster offers a similar definition.

The origin? The story of one of Hercules twelve labors: cleaning the huge, filthy stables of King Augeas.

But we have a word that means that same thing and is far more widely known: Herculean.

Now, alternate definitions from the OED (and not, tellingly, offered by Merriam-Webster), are on the general topic of filth, corruption, or depravity. Which kinda of works in this context. Except in the context of a "Augean task," I'm pretty sure the writer didn't mean that the task itself was corrupt or depraved. If that was the case, "Augean economy" would be better. For bonus points, the two could be combined:

"He wanted to demilitarize Soviet foreign policy so that he could divert resources to the Herculean task of fixing an Augean economy."

It works even better, as the metaphor is clearer!

Because the future is stupid and awful, I somehow find myself mourning Microsoft leaving the browser engine market.

You know, I'm willing to support eliminating the minimum wage and be against requiring interns to be paid. But first let's get universal health care and a guaranteed minimum income that allows for a life of dignity.

Except the core of people in favor of the first two will never accept the latter.

Code I've been handed crashes in release, works fine in debug, and generated 2002 warnings with -Wall.

* sigh *

Also, for all that is good, I totally get that error checking in shell is a nuisance. But if you're not going to do it, at least slap "set -e" at the top of your script so I don't get cascading cryptic errors.

The existence of two different programs called "parallel" which are very but not entirely similar, neither of which is standard on my distribution, is making my life irritating.
