This is an interesting read for me, as I live in Zurich and not far (in terms of modern transportation) from Geneva. In fact, I pass by Zwinglihaus not infrequently.

For those who despair about the current state of the Middle East and the Islamic world, it's easy to forget what Europe was like just a few centuries ago. In the 16th century, Zurich and Geneva were the headquarters of the Christian analogue of the Taliban. Today, Zurich is ruled by money rather than by religion, and Geneva is at the heart of international diplomacy and consequently an important location in the international fight for human rights. A lot can change in a few centuries (and, perhaps tragically, a few very bloody wars).

As a point of comparison, Baghdad in the 13th century was one of the main centres of high civilisation, producing art, philosophy, mathematics, science, and engineering. The Islamic Golden Age is the reason so many of the words we use in mathematics and astronomy are Arabic. Critics of the idea that the Islamic Golden Age should be credited to Islam point out, correctly, that many of the philosophers and scientists who contributed to this era were Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, or nominal Muslims whose writings were as close to atheism as was permissible, and non-Muslims were treated as second-class citizens in many contexts. The Muslim masses, these critics say, resented the power and prestige held by these perceived "outsiders".

But the exact same criticism can be leveled at America: it is successful and prosperous because of its perceived "foreign" (read "non-white and non-Christian") immigrants, not to mention the underpaid labour of a huge underclass of racial minorities (mostly black and Hispanic). If you were of Chinese or South Asian or Middle Eastern descent, you could do very well in some parts of America, and in other parts you would be treated very badly - rather like how Christians and Jews fared in the Islamic Golden Age.

The downfall of the Islamic world came about in the form of a nativism expressed as religious fundamentalism, and America appears to want to head down the same path. It's amazing to me that this parallel isn't point out more often. What's even more amazing is that the American critics of Islam who credit the Islamic Golden Age to the exploitation of Christians, Jews, and other minorities are the same ones who support a form of Christian nativism ("build a wall", "convert them to Christianity"). It seems that those who cannot remember the past are indeed condemned to repeat it.
