Seemed to get stuck at the 'installing rescue device' step on a Samsung Galaxy S2. Mac tool complained that it couldn't see the phone anymore. Phone now won't turn on. Just tried the hold-both-volume-buttons-and-plug-in-USB trick, still dead.

Floored today with the experience of a +Dell  with preinstalled +Ubuntu  It was cheaper than the same thing with Windows, had fewer annoying stickers (it did have a Ubuntu sticker, but no need for a licence key sticker, ...), booted quite fast, ran a customised first-boot wizard (which was basically the same as Ubuntu installation wizerd, but with a couple extra Dell-specific steps) and then it turned the webcam on so the owner could either pick one of the ready-made user icons or take a picture of their face in one click and then it capped the whole thing off with a cool video version of the Ubuntu experience presentation.
Everything worked out-of-the-box: keyboard with all the special keys, video, sound, webcam, wireless, wired, ...
I was floored and in awe. I want to say great thank you to eveyone involved in creating this - from Debian developers creating the solid base, to Ubuntu developers bringing their vision, to Cannonical driving the business case and to Dell seing the light and giving this great option to us, the consumers.
I could easily recommend my mother bying a Dell with Ubuntu and be 95% sure she would be able to start working on it without my help. I did not think that was a possibility this morning.

I saw this in someone's timeline but it was un-attributed, and I wanted to make sure that people could find the original.

How not to design a CAPTCHA

Unfortunately Sony missed the entire point of a CAPTCHA. Instead of using an obfuscated image which is difficult for computers to recognize the characters, they include the CAPTCHA's unobfuscated characters in HTML and use CSS and JavaScript to make the characters appear slightly distorted.

While taking a Digital Image and Video Processing class (EE 371R at utexas.edu), I picked up a summer hobby of writing CAPTCHA breakers. Most CAPTCHAs can be decoded with a combination of Gaussian edge detection and XOR difference analysis with known characters. However this one falls to a simple regex.

I seem to have some trouble trying to figure out what some distorted captchas contain.

On the other hand, I saw one these days that was easier for a human: it showed two cats and asked "how many kittens are in this picture".

I knew Mac's resumed quickly, but I'd never quite realised the network re-initialisation was so clever:
