How common are police shootings?
Check out this article about a recent VICE News report on police shootings in the United States. Tracking police shootings is notoriously difficult since federal data on the issue is unreliable and incomplete. The VICE report analyzed data from the nation’s 50 largest police departments to get a better idea of how prevalent both fatal and non-fatal police shootings are. The findings showed that police shootings of unarmed people in particular are much higher than previously believed.

Distracted walking is more myth than reality
Take a look at this article about a recent study that casts doubt on the theory that distracted walking is a major factor in the recent surge in pedestrian fatalities. Pedestrian deaths are near a 25-year high and many analysts and law enforcement agencies have tried to blame pedestrians looking at their cellphones as one reason for the increase. Traffic deaths stay high as cars get safer

The report shows that traffic deaths declined slightly, but still remain near decade-high levels. The NSC says that advanced safety features in many new cars means that deaths should be declining much faster than they are, but that widespread distracted driving and higher speed limits are holding back progress.

Hit-and-run alert system unveiled in NYC
Check out this article about how New York City recently implemented a new hit-and-run alert system that supporters say will hopefully lead to more arrests of drivers who flee the scene of an accident. The alert system will notify New Yorkers via text, email, and social media about a hit-and-run accident within 24 hours. Currently, only half of hit-and-run crashes eventually lead to an arrest. The system is the latest initiative designed to lower pedestrian fatalities in the city.

Distracted driving vastly underreported

Drugged driving deaths rise dramatically
Take a look at this article about how the opioid epidemic has helped fuel a dramatic increase in drugged driving deaths in the United States. A Columbia University study found that the percentage of male drivers killed in accidents who tested positive for prescription drugs rose from under one percent to five percent between the periods of 1995 to 1999 and 2010 to 2015. For women, meanwhile, deceased drivers who tested positive for prescriptions soared from just over one percent to more than seven percent.
