New paper published: "Carbon balance effects of U.S. biofuel production and use," in the journal Climatic Change, 25 August 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10584-016-1764-4

Corn (left) and soybeans (right) are the most widely planted crops in the United States. These farm fields do not remove CO2 from the air more quickly when they are harvested to make biofuel than when they are harvested for food. That's why biofuels aren't "carbon neutral." As a result, biofuels now cause greater CO2 emissions than petroleum fuels.
