Offering students a fully accredited, comprehensive, personalized education in music
Introduction

The Department of Music is a relatively small department that prides itself in creating a learning environment that focuses on individual student success. Each student is provided the personalized attention and mentoring necessary to be successful in the music program. Our small class sizes - average 12:1 student to faculty ratio - help to guarantee that each student’s needs are met.

Students taking music courses are taught by experts in the music field; no graduate teaching assistants teach music courses at Clarion. All full-time music faculty have terminal degrees in music and maintain an active professional profile in their specialty areas. Additionally, all music faculty serve as academic advisers to music students, so our faculty are intimately involved with the academic progress of each student.

The student body in the plays a vital role in fostering a productive learning atmosphere. The “typical” Clarion music student may be described as being “talented,” “friendly,” “outgoing,” and “helpful.” The diversity exhibited by our student body and faculty further works to foster tolerance, patience, understanding, and appreciation for varied viewpoints.

All music curricula are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Having NASM accreditation insures that our music programs meet the same standards met by music programs at larger colleges and universities. Students studying music at Clarion can feel confident that they will receive a top-quality music education. The Music Education program also is fully accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Beyond course work, students have numerous opportunities to further their professional development. Workshops, clinics, conferences, and teaching opportunities abound as students expand their learning to outside the classroom. Student music organizations, such as NAFME, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha, Sigma Alpha Iota, also help students to gain valuable leadership experience.
