Progressive Web Apps consist of a new palette of technologies such as the web app manifest, home screen install support, service workers and the app shell. These bridge the gap between native and web apps offering new capabilities for web developers to create amazing desktop and mobile experiences.

If you're a web developer and want to get started with Progressive Web Apps you can join us for a 3 hour session where we will create our first Progressive Web App together. So bring your laptop and we'll discover these new technologies and transform a simple site into a Progressive Web App.

The session will be held by GDG Athens at Found.ation Athens (Peiraios 123) on the 7th of December (17:00 - 20:00) by Bill Stavroulakis. Bill is a Google Developer Expert (PWAs, Polymer.js, Web technologies), Microsoft MVP and the creator of dotNET Weekly.

If you are a developer who wants to share your experiences at the kick off barcamp of the first droidcon in Greece:
You will have 2 minutes to persuade the audience to vote for your talk and the most voted talk will have a proper slot in the official barcamp.
If you are a startup who wants to share its service/products to a wider audience including VCs and partners:
You will have, if selected, 5 minutes to pitch your startup at the first droidcon democamp happening in Greece.
The droidcon Pitch Arena is located at the Pavilion 15 of the Thessaloniki International Fair, near our droidcon booth

What is Google VPN / Google Connectivity Service?

Android 5.1 appears to have added a new application or service that hasn't been announced, yet. It appears to be a VPN application from the Googs, though it's not fully working at this time.

From a networking standpoint, offering a VPN to over a billion users is a daunting task, even for the Googs. Then again, not all users are on 5.1, not all users would be connected at the same time, so there is a possibility. Still, even a few million users is a crazy idea. Then again, how many people actually use an Open WiFi network? Maybe the total amount is quite lower than I think.

I could see them offering this as an Android at Work service to secure enterprise communications where the enterprise is not providing their own VPN. I could also see this as part of their upcoming MVNO to secure WiFi connections since we believe the MVNO will utilize WiFi where possible.

THE PARTICIPATION IS FREE

LESSON 1 | CREATE YOUR PROJECT | 26 feb @18:00
Starting by installing Android Studio, you’ll create your first project with a simple list-based user interface and built and deploy it to virtual and actual devices. You’ll also discover what makes mobile - and Android in particular - a unique environment for app development.

LESSON 2 | CONNECT YOUR PROJECT TO THE CLOUD | 5 mar @18:00
Replace the mock data with real weather data by connecting Sunshine up to an Internet back-end courtesy of the Open Weather Map API. You’ll learn how to add permissions to your app, initiate network I/O, and how to move time consuming tasks like network data transfers off the main UI thread.

LESSON 3 | NEW ACTIVITIES AND NAVIGATE YOUR APP WITH INTENTS | 12 mar @18:00
Give your app structure and create more complex Activities. You’ll learn about Android’s Intent framework, and how to use Intents to navigate between Activities, both within your app and as a way to add 3rd party functionality.

LESSON 4A | USE CONTENT PROVIDERS AND LOADERS TO PERSIST & RECOVER DATA | 19 mar @18:00
Learn how the Android framework manages the activity lifecycle, and how it differs from what you might expect, and dive head-first into the world of persistent storage. Learn how to create databases, use Android’s Content Providers to provide an abstraction layer between your data and your UI implementation, and use Loaders to efficiently load stored data.

LESSON 4B | USE CONTENT PROVIDERS AND LOADERS TO PERSIST & RECOVER DATA | 26 mar @18:00
In-depth ;-)

LESSON 5 | IMPLEMENT RICH AND RESPONSIVE LAYOUTS | 2 mar @18:00
Create rich, responsive user interfaces that work across a variety of different hardware types and screen sizes. You’ll learn more details on using the Android Layout managers, Fragments, UI widgets, and Android design principles to add visual polish to your user interfaces, and how to create your own controls from scratch

LESSON 6 | USE SERVICES AND NOTIFICATIONS TO RUN IN BACKGROUND | 9 apr @18:00
Deliver a great user experience, even when your app isn't visible. Learn how the Android framework manages background apps; and discover how to use Services and Notifications to make your app to be active when it’s not in the foreground. You’ll learn techniques for efficient data transfers using SyncAdapters and Google Cloud Messaging, so your app can stay up-to-date without draining the battery.
