Spent a long day at the O'Reilly MAKE Open Hardware Innovation conference held at PARC. (Thanks, PARC!)

The first three people I met +Dale Dougherty (who started MAKE and the Faire), +Limor Fried and +phillip torrone of +Adafruit Industries (who were totally mobbed the entire time -- glad I caught them on their way in).

Other luminaries who were open and friendly to talk to were Travis Good who co-organized, Eric Weddington of WinAVR, and +Lenore Edman of +Evil Mad Science . I also met many other folks who are starting new activities in these spaces around the country and the world.

Plus +Tim O'Reilly re-tweeted me twice!

I'm looking forward to showing out stuff at the Maker Faire where I'll be in the booth organized by +Michael Pechner

ROBOT PARTY TOMORROW!
robotpartyrobotpartyrobotpartyrobotpartyrobotpartyrobotparty w00t w00t

Tomorrow (Thursday) is the Robot Party! This Robot Party is VERY SPECIAL because it is taking place at +Evil Mad Science !

They have tons of robots here, the biggest one is the shopbot. We might put the webcam on the shopbot and have it move around! +Lenore Edman & +Windell Oskay will also be around so you can ask them LOTS of questions!

:::

What is the Robot Party?
The Robot Party is a weekly Google+ hangout that brings together robot builders from all over to share their robots, knowledge, and ask questions! It is for all age ranges, young or old, just bring your robot!

To watch the Robot Party, go to the Robot Party page here:
http://robotgrrl.com/robotparty

To join the Robot Party with your robot, watch our Google+ page right here for the hangout! (Usually 5-10mins before showtime)

To see old photos of the Robot Party, check out the flickr collection here:

Looking forward to hanging out with everyone again! We’ve heard from +Sean Lewis +Eaglesnest Robotics recently and they have been building up their +Christopher Robinson Tiny Tanks, so it will be really cool to see them!

Also since this is on the tail end of RoboGames and the Homebrew Robotics Group meeting, we may have new people!

The bandwidth for this Robot Party seems like it will be okay, the upload speed is 0.27Mbps. We’ll see how it goes

SEE YOU AT THE ROBOT PARTY! Tell all your friends!

Love this post over at A Dress A Day. +Erin McKean nails it about ridiculous DRM as it relates to sewing patterns. This spills over into lots of other areas, too, like embroidery, but I'll leave that rant for later. Besides, Erin did a such a great job, I don't really need to add to it.

Our EggBot kit (http://egg-bot.com/) arrived yesterday, so last night my eleven-year-old performed the assembly with very little assistance from yours truly. He followed the on-line instructions, and all I did was help him with one of the split washers that needed some tweaking, tighten some screws, and wire the stepper motors (he could have done that, but was concerned about frying the motors). When the process first started, he wasn't at all that sure that this was worth his effort, but by the end he was really excited. Our initial prints went very well, and I think it was only a little over 2 hours from the time we unpacked the parts until we were printing our first test.
The first thing he said to me today was, "Can I make something in Inkscape tonight that we can print on the EggBot?"
Mission accomplished!

The EggBot, donated by Evil Mad Scientist for our trip to Cairo, was way popular at our 3-day hackerspace that we set up at Maker Faire Africa, with the help of Cairo Hackerspace. Some people, including Manal, also hand-painted their eggs.

I've been watching +Limor Fried's stream of Lady Ada Lovelace Day posts all day, and feeling wonderful to be in the company of such awesome women. Thanks, Limor!

For Ada Lovelace Day, I am reposting this awesome picture from the Open Hardware Summit. The Open Hardware Summit is an great event not just in that it brings together a community, but also in that it is run by two amazing women +Ayah Bdeir and +Alicia Gibb (who are both in this picture with me). They put a number of women who are pioneers of the open hardware movement up at the podium, including +Kate Hartman (also pictured), +Myriam Ayass, Alison Powell, Gabriella Levine, Autumn Wiggins, Addie Wagenknecht, +Amanda Wozniak, and Benedetta Piantella. Thanks to all of these women for the work that they do and the work that they inspire.
