Hello friends!

Last winter I started writing and illustrating a children's book about a mischievous boy, "Otter Boyd", growing up in northern Canada. In his story, set in the early 1900s, Otter enjoys fishing, nature, playing outdoors, drawing, painting, telling stories and getting into all sorts of accidental mischief.

As I began thinking about ways to share the book, and how to introduce the main character to new friends, I thought it would be fun and interesting to let Otter take over and do all the talking himself! To give Otter a space to play, speak and grow I created a website (www.otterboyd.com) and reinvented my G+ stream for him too.

Here on G+ Otter shares most of his posts into three collections:

The Outdoors Collection is for sharing photos and tales of the nature and landscape Otter encounters around his home in the wilderness. https://plus.google.com/collection/UImvl

Otter's Art Collection is where he shares his paintings, drawings and illustrations. As book illustrations are completed some may be shared into this collection too. https://plus.google.com/collection/0LJxl

Postcards from Otter Boyd is a special new collection which combines photos and artwork along with a short message from Otter explaining what he's been up to lately. It is here that Otter, his brothers, relatives and friends can get themselves into the pictures. https://plus.google.com/collection/QBaNEE

The content shared here is often an abbreviated version of content shared on Otter's website. To see more detail on any post, and more photos, please check out the website.

I hope you will enjoy my website, G+ stream and collections!

Yellow Spotted Salamander in Muskoka
I found this one crawling up the step to my front door one night so I rescued him and helped him find a nice home in the forest. More photos and details on the salamander can be found on my website: http://otterboyd.com/yellow-spotted-salamander-in-muskoka/

Wild Turkey Taking A Dust Bath

I've been seeing a lot more wild turkeys around my house lately and just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving. This one had great fun giving himself a dust bath in the field next to the forest. I know some people will be thinking, "covered in sand today, covered in cranberry sauce tomorrow", but this turkey has nothing to worry about. The wildlife around here is psychic. The moment the thought crosses your mind about trying to catch anything for the dinner table the wildlife senses those intentions and magically disappears. They allow me to stalk and hunt with a camera and nothing else. I have accepted the fact that the turkeys will outwit me every time so when I go out there I just try to get some snaps instead of snacks.

Little White Mushroom on Colorful Autumn Leaf

The recent heatwave in Muskoka delayed the Fall colors a bit but now the chill is back and leaves are coloring up again. It should be a nice weekend for walks in the woods around here. I hope you all have a nice weekend too!

The little white mushroom looks innocent enough resting quietly on a blazing leaf but it is most likely deadly as so many of the all white ones are.

Colorful Glass and Shadows

This display of colorful glass glowing in sunlight on a yard sale table caught my eye so I had to stop and take a few photos. I wasn’t drawn to any particular piece but liked how all the vibrant colors, reflections and shadows played together to create endless shapes within shapes. The always changing sunlight and clouds caused the shadows and reflections to pulse, move and flow as if they were alive or energized in some way. It was an interesting abstract effect.

Boyd Scout Playing Under the Chocolate Milky Way

It was another nice night in the garden, and another great view of the Chocolate Milky Way, so I had to take some pictures and send you a postcard. Oh, and while doing this I earned another Boyd Scout badge - the Staying Up Way Past My Bedtime badge. Dad says I've been earning that one since I was born so I can stop trying now. I say, once you're this heavily invested in becoming good at something then why stop? Just think of all the suffering I've put myself through, and everyone else, by always staying up far too late. I can't afford to get rusty at it now!

White Cosmos Flower
It is nice to see cosmos blooms in mass plantings but sometimes less is more as in the case of this lone white cosmos flower standing tall against a backdrop of Fall colors. Cosmos is usually associated with the height of hot dry summer but this one seems to represent something else. It’s a beacon reminding me that soon all the Autumn colors will fade into the background to be replaced by cool, crisp and clean wintry whites dominating the landscape.

Trail Life USA Artwork

Dear members of Trail Life USA, I've just put the collection of free artwork back online for you to use. I am also making my photographs freely available to you too. I have tried doing this here before but now understand that most of you are over on Facebook and don't see my G+ posts. If you do see this please Like my FB page and share the web page with your TLUSA friends and groups over on FB so they can find the artwork.

If you have any suggestions or requests for future Trail Life artwork, graphics, illustrations or clip art I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to comment here or via my website any time. Thanks!

Painting of a Boy Walking in a Colorful Fall Forest

The season for autumn hikes has returned in Muskoka so I wanted to share one of my favorite Fall paintings done a couple years ago. I was trying to capture some of the color and glow of the forest and a sense of the adventure and magical mystery the boy is entering as he heads down a winding trail in the deep woods. It is a picture pulled from memory of one of my autumn adventures, and a picture of the autumn adventures taken every year since.
