Is it possible that nobody knew about the world’s largest cave until five years ago?

Son Doong Cave is hidden in rugged Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Vietnam near the border with Laos. The cave is actually made up of a network of around 150 caves, many still not surveyed. The biggest chamber of Son Doong is more than five kilometers long, 200 meters high and 150 meters wide. The cave was created around 2-5 million years ago by river water eroding away the limestone underneath the mountains. First discovered by a local man in 1991, it became known worldwide in 2009, when it was explored by British cavers. The team found an underground river running through the first 2.5 kilometers of the limestone cavern, as well as giant stalagmites more than 70 meters high. Son Doong was recently opened to the public, with the first trial tours involving a 36-hour trek through uninhabited jungle and spending a night camping in the cave.

Foto: +AFP
