Texto del Evangelio (Jn 8,31-42): En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los judíos que habían creído en Él: «Si os mantenéis en mi Palabra, seréis verdaderamente mis discípulos, y conoceréis la verdad y la verdad os hará libres». Ellos le respondieron: «Nosotros somos descendencia de Abraham y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo dices tú: Os haréis libres?». Jesús les respondió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: todo el que comete pecado es un esclavo. Y el esclavo no se queda en casa para siempre; mientras el hijo se queda para siempre. Si, pues, el Hijo os da la libertad, seréis realmente libres. Ya sé que sois descendencia de Abraham; pero tratáis de matarme, porque mi Palabra no prende en vosotros. Yo hablo lo que he visto donde mi Padre; y vosotros hacéis lo que habéis oído donde vuestro padre».

Ellos le respondieron: «Nuestro padre es Abraham». Jesús les dice: «Si sois hijos de Abraham, haced las obras de Abraham. Pero tratáis de matarme, a mí que os he dicho la verdad que oí de Dios. Eso no lo hizo Abraham. Vosotros hacéis las obras de vuestro padre». Ellos le dijeron: «Nosotros no hemos nacido de la prostitución; no tenemos más padre que a Dios». Jesús les respondió: «Si Dios fuera vuestro Padre, me amaríais a mí, porque yo he salido y vengo de Dios; no he venido por mi cuenta, sino que Él me ha enviado».

Si Dios fuera vuestro Padre, me amaríais a mí
Hoy, el Señor dirige duras palabras a los judíos. No a cualquier judío, sino, precisamente, a aquellos que abrazaron la fe: Jesús dijo «a los judíos que habían creído en Él» (Jn 8,31). Sin duda, este diálogo de Jesús refleja el inicio de aquellas dificultades causadas por los cristianos judaizantes en la primera hora de la Iglesia.

Como eran descendientes de Abraham según la consanguineidad, esos tales discípulos de Jesús se consideraban superiores no solamente de los gentíos que vivían lejos de la fe, sino también superiores a cualquier discípulo no judío partícipe de la misma fe. Ellos decían: «Nosotros somos descendencia de Abraham» (Jn 8,33); «nuestro padre es Abraham» (v. 39); «solo tenemos un padre, Dios» (v. 41). A pesar de ser discípulos de Jesús, tenemos la impresión de que Jesús nada representaba para ellos, nada acrecentaba al que ya poseían. Pero es ahí donde se encuentra el gran error de todos ellos: los verdaderos hijos no son los descendientes según la consanguineidad, sino los herederos de la promesa, o sea, aquellos que creen (cf. Rom 9,6-8). Sin la fe en Jesús no es posible que alguien alcance la promesa de Abraham. Por tanto, entre los discípulos «no hay judíos o griego; no hay esclavo o libre; no hay hombre o mujer», porque todos son hermanos por el bautismo (cf. Gal 3,27-28).

No nos dejemos seducir por orgullo espiritual. Los judaizantes se consideraban superiores a los otros cristianos. No es necesario hablar, aquí, de los hermanos separados. Pero pensemos en nosotros mismos. ¡Cuántas veces algunos católicos se consideran mejores que los otros católicos porque siguen este o aquel movimiento, porque observan esta o aquella disciplina, porque obedecen a este o a aquel uso litúrgico! Unos, porque son ricos; otros, porque estudiaron más. Unos, porque ocupan cargos importantes; otros, porque vienen de familias nobles... «Quisiera que cada uno de vosotros sintiera la alegría de ser cristiano… Dios guía a su Iglesia, la sostiene siempre, también y sobre todo en los momentos difíciles» (Benedicto XVI).
