A few weeks ago a very important event occurred, but unfortunately flooded, into the non stopping waves of continuous information…the Literature Noble Prize has been awarded to Mr Patrick Modiano, a French writer, until then, almsot only known in France.

The Nobel Academy motivated this prize “for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the Occupation".

Patrick Modiano, born in 1945, is one of the most talented writers of his generation, with books that explore the past with a great precision and sense of detail.

This proves, if needed, that French culture, is still present in a world of globalization, and, at the Mayfair, we are very happy about that!

Until August 17th, at the Petit-Palais, we recommend the exhibition ‘Paris 1900, The City of Entertainment’. It is an invitation to the public to relive the splendour of the French capital at the time when the “Paris Exposition Universelle” was heralding the arrival of the 20th century.

The Petit-Palais is at walking distance from the Hotel Mayfair Paris.

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm. Late opening until 10pm on Thursdays for this temporary exhibition.

Monumenta

Created by the ministry of Culture and Communication in 2007, Monumenta invites an internationally renowned contemporary artist to take over the 13,500 m² Nave of the Grand Palais with an artwork specially created for the event.

After the success of the first five editions entrusted to the German painter Anselm Kiefer in 2007, the American sculptor Richard Serra in 2008, the French artist Christian Boltanski in 2010, the Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor in 2011, and the French creator Daniel Buren in 2012, it is the turn of Russian-born couple, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov to take on the nave.

We are finishing the renovation of two new De Luxe Rooms decorated in famous wall fabric called “Toile de Jouy”! These two rooms will be available Saturday 28 of February 2015, in 4 days :-)

At the Hotel Mayfair Paris, we have 6 De Luxe Rooms and 1 Junior Suite with Toile de Jouy. Each one is uniquely decorated with its own colour and pattern.

This renovation is the opportunity to explain what Toile de Jouy is. So let’s have a short history lesson below!

At the end of the 17th century, Europe discovered beautiful cottons from India that were painted with flowers and vividly coloured animals.

However, the stiff competition this brought to traditional silk and cotton manufacturers caused Louis XIV to ban imports of manufactured cloth throughout the country. In 1759, with the lifting of the ban, many foreigners who had become the only experts in this field moved to France.

Among them, Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, engraver and printer from Württemberg (Germany), established a factory in France, in a village called “Jouy-en-Josas”.

“Jouy-en-Josas” was chosen because of its water quality and its proximity to Paris and Versailles.

Production began in 1760. The factory became the largest in Europe, employing 1,237 people in 1821.

In the course of his career, Oberkampf was awarded the Legion of Honor by Napoleon himself.

The village still exists nowadays and there is a “Toile de Jouy” museum to visit.

That was as short as possible, so next time you will stay at the Hotel Mayfair Paris, do not hesitate to ask for a De Luxe or a Junior Suite “Toile de Jouy” Room, and think about its history!

Early December, we had the privilege and the pleasure to attend to the ILTM (International Luxury Travel Market) in Cannes, France, to meet luxury travel agencies from all over the world. It was a great opportunity to meet our partners and clients from different countries and cultures!

To Hospitality and Travel Industry, the ILTM Cannes is the equivalent of the Cannes Film Festival for the Movie Industry : a perfect moment for business during the day and gathering around casual events in the evening.

Between September and December 2014, four major events will allow Paris to keep its motion and will contribute to its national and international influence in arts, history and architecture!

The Louis Vuitton Foundation, the Picasso Museum, The Canopy des Halles and the renovated first floor of the Eiffel Tower will soon be (re)opened!

All Paris visitors will have four more attractions and, if needed, four more reasons to visit Paris…four more times, at least.

Photos are sometimes more relevant than words. Here they are.

We are delighted to share with our guests a photo of the new common areas carpet.

We’ve selected a royal blue colour and golden heraldic lily pattern (Fleur de Lys).

Particularly associated with the French monarchy, and in extension to the House of Bourbon, this colour and pattern are also still present in the coat of arms of the city of Paris.

We believe this reflects European history, French history, Paris, French classic style and that it strengthens our decoration identity.

We hope you will all appreciated it. Please do not hesitate to share your comments with us!
