Laurel Masse and Cheryl Bentyne share the soprano spot on one of the very few occasions when Laurel returned to her old spot with the Manhattan Transfer. It's Laurel on the first two numbers, and Cheryl on the last of the three. The 2004 MAC Awards must have been the place to be that night.

Everything the Singers Unlimited ever recorded is as close to perfection as possible, but this collection has all the great cuts on it. I can't recommend it enough! Bonnie Herman has never been equaled; Len Dresslar OWNS the bass part, and Gene Puerling wrote the best vocal charts - and sang so beautifully unobtrusive on the 3rd part. The only member still with us is Don Shelton; I wish he'd win the lottery and spend it it letting people know what they've been missing, if they don't know what the Hi-Lo's and Singers Unlimited have accomplished in the past decades.

These wonderful old videos really capture the group - the third version of the Freshmen, and arguably the best. Bass singer Ken Albers had recently replaced Ken Errair in 1955, when Errair married Jane Withers and not long afterward died when his private plane crashed into a mountain in southern California. Errair himself replaced Hal Kratsch, the original 4th-part singer, whose wife insisted that he stay home and work at the local foundry. After not too long, Hal sneaked off and joined a terrific group, the Signatures, where he stayed until illness forced him to give up the music business forever. And that's only the first three changes the Freshmen were to undergo. The current version is the 40th-something group . . . and all the originals have passed away.

TWO amazing, talented ladies. I just discovered this video and am enjoying it to the fullest. More, please. There's nothing quite like a family bland . . . especially in your family.

Laurel is a national treasure. I hope the only reason she isn't better known is that she doesn't want to.

Well, the Pope has gone home. It brought back memories of 1963. when I was working at KENO, a Las Vegas radio station. We had a morning man named Coffee Jim Dandy who truly believed he was going to hell for reading an Associated Press bulletin a little wrong: what came out of his mouth was "Dateline, the Vatican: The Pope has slipped into a kimono."

MUKO as a blog?  Yes, even the mythical land of Esperantujo is catching up with the times. Hey, we've got free medicare for all, no taxes, hardly any laws, and - nyah nyah, Putin, we've got a time machine! So pay attention, folks. You may all want to move here eventually, even if right now the idea of living in a Mafia fiefdom in a multi-island republic at the very bottom of South America doesn't appeal to you.

Enjoy, my friends. I promise to readers old and new that here you will find the lowest journalistic standards anywhere, including North Korea.

Great! Best singer I'd never heard of until a few months ago. Taste, style and as fine with jazz phrasing as I've ever heard.

An incomparable musical experiment, and somehow sad to know that everything they did was in a studio. They never once played a live gig.

But they set the gold standard for vocal group singing, and everyone else learned from what they left us.
