You are absolutely right that creating a good API is an art, but you seem to completely gloss over the effort it takes to actually clone an API. There's massive development effort required to follow someone else's lead on an API, and no guarantee that a competitor's execution on that will be on par with the original.  The competitor also has to keep up with a (presumably) moving target and win mindshare from the original developer's customer  base or find net new users.  If they manage to do all that, kudos to them!  A world with competing implementations of a single API is better for everyone than a world where APIs are forced to be different / incompatible on legal grounds.

I've been making "individual drip" coffee at home for almost a year now, and every now and then I wonder if I'm doing everything right. Lo and behold, my favorite Bay Area coffee roaster, Blue Bottle Coffee, has an awesome, somewhat-illustrated guide. I followed it this morning and made the best cup of coffee I've had in a while.

This nook is so much more functional with +CyanogenMod. Should have installed it months ago.

A LEGO space shuttle in space... very cool.
The trend of launching LEGO toys into space continues: a father and son send a LEGO space shuttle into high altitude using a weather balloon. Be sure to watch the last minute of the video because the space shuttle travelled to 35,000 meters high.(via +PSFK)
