You know the obvious dangers to avoid when it comes to pet care - but what about dangers of the avian nature? Though it's fairly uncommon, it's worth a warning that large hawks in our area can attack or kill small pets left unattended in the backyard.

They perch, mostly unseen, in tall trees and have some of the best eyesight in the animal community, along with some incredible and unstoppable speed - making your scampering little pet an easy target if left alone.

Be vigilant when leaving small dogs and cats outside alone. Perfect for fall weather, you can make a scarecrow for your backyard as "human" presence tends to scare off these large birds of prey. Some say even dangling old CD's from the scarecrow can also deter hawk activity!
