A group of pink sapphire and blue iolite gemstones that we cut from Palmer Canyon deposit I found some years back.

Iolite is an uncommon gemstone that changes color in different light sources as well as during rotation in the same light source. A beautiful gem that is every bit as spectacular as tanzanite, and at a much lower price. Wyoming has the world's largest iolites and iolite deposits and nothing is being done with them.

SOUTH PASS GRANITE-GREENSTONE BELT
During the 1980s, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) completed 8 geological quadrangles (ATTACHED) covering more than 350 square miles of surface area within the South Pass region along the southern tip of the Wind River Mountains. This project resulted not only in the production of this group of geological maps, but also several underground mine maps were completed, dozens of gold anomalies were detected, and many structural controls (or guides) for gold mineralization were recognized including a few gold targets of potential size.
Much of the data was published in several reports and compiled into an overall summary on this important greenstone terrain. South Pass has historically been the state's most productive gold and iron ore district ( see Hausel, 1991, WSGS, Report of Investigations 44).
A few of the reports published by the WSGS are available through our publications office http://www.wsgs.uwyo.edu/pubs/). Many of the other papers published by various outside journals and conference proceedings may be available at various University libraries.

http://sloan-kimberlite.blogspot.com/ Kimberlite at the Sloan property in Colorado contains hundreds of thousands of diamonds. A large part of the two pipes was eroded over geological time, so there likely are millions of diamonds in the streams in the area.

One of my favorite rocks - a very rare kyanite eclogite from the Aultman kimberlite pipe in Wyoming. This is composed mostly of blue kyanite, green chrome diopside and reddish brown to red almandine garnet (all gemstones). While mapping the State Line kiimberlite/diamond district, I also found a second kyanite eclogite that was bout 10 times this size. A very, very heavy mantle nodule. The larger of these two was placed on exhibit at the Wyoming Geological Survey and may still be there (luckily, most politicians and state directors don't know enough about mineralogy to realize the value of such rocks).
