Today at church I learned that since eating feeds your "Earthly body" and not your spiritual existence and body, even overeating and enjoying food too much is considered a sin. LOL we're all going to hell

"The sufferings of unsaved men are often used by the Holy Spirit to cause them to realize their needs of salvation and to turn to Christ in repentance and faith. The sufferings of Christians should always be the means of developing a stronger dependence on God and a more Christ-like character, if they are properly “exercised thereby” (Hebrews 12:11)."

so suffering and pain are an instrument to coerce men into leading more spiritual lives? That doesn't sound very merciful or loving to me.

This must be a quote from someone's book or article, it is not actually Hebrews 12:11.
Discipline is not unmerciful but the opposite. I have to discipline Xander. I don't let him run wild so he can get hurt. I teach him to obey me not because it's some power trip but because I am responsible for keeping him healthy and safe. He is well-loved and I am never harsh with him. He loves me and his dad and I'm sure he knows we love him, even when he has to be put in time-out, etc. If we don't do it, he will be lost.
