FAQ: Is it safe to buy a "fibro" house?

The “fibro” (asbestos cement sheeting) needs to be assessed. Is it painted or sealed? Is it damaged? Does it have holes, gouges or scrapes? Is it fibro or asbestos insulation board? What is its surface condition? Has it been exposed to conditions adverse to the cement holding it together? Seek help for professional assessment.

Asbestos waste should not be dumped, or disposed of in domestic bins or normal skips. Failure to handle and dispose of asbestos in an appropriate and responsible manner could mean that you are subject to prosecution under the Dangerous Substances Act 2004.

Asbestos isn't always dangerous. Understanding when asbestos poses a health risk is vital for avoiding exposure danger. When left intact and undisturbed, asbestos containing materials do not pose a health risk to people working or living in buildings. Asbestos containing material is generally only considered d to be harmful when it is releasing dust or fibers into the air where they can be inhaled or ingested.
