New study: Rapid development of thyroid dysfunction in patients treated with Nivolumab. Study conclusions: "As the use of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy increases, the need for prompt diagnosis and treatment of drug-induced thyroid disease will become more important. As illustrated in this case series, in contrast to other causes of auto-immune thyroiditis, hypothyroidism can develop rapidly within 3 months of treatment."

Maternal hypothyroidism pre-conception and in the first few weeks after conception hinders the child's brain development and potential intelligence for their entire lives! Before becoming pregnant (and if not previously tested, once pregnancy is confirmed), testing TSH, total T3, total T4, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies is critical. If hypothyroidism or autoimmune hypothyroidism is found, a Functional Medicine expert can implement pregnancy-safe options to effect thyroid function.

With hurricane flooding of homes in Texas and Florida, I expect rates of mold-induced illnesses are to rise dramatically in the next few months and years. (The symptoms and signs expected to start being seen are low thyroid function and autoimmune thyroiditis, but this will not be the root cause.) Many people will not have proper remediation from water damage, with certain susceptibility to increased mold growth and mycotoxin-induced Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS). In many cases completely tearing down homes and rebuilding with dry wood will be necessary, but the expense will obviously be prohibitive for many. If you have loved ones with EVEN SLIGHT flooding damage in these areas forward this post and the provided information to them so they can make well informed choices going forward subsequent to hurricane flooding damage.
NOTE: Most doctors will not be aware of how to properly identify mold-induced SIRS via lab testing. Fewer will be knowledgeable with the proper safe and effective methods for resolving it. Seek out an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner with experience in resolving mycotoxin-induced SIRS or a Dr. Shoemaker trained physician who is also knowledgeable with nutritional therapies.
