As part of Social Media Week, we hosted an event last night on social media, BBC and the Olympics - how athletes and broadcasters are preparing for the London 2012 Games.

Chaired by the BBC's Director of London 2012, Roger Mosey, the panel featured current rowing gold medalists Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter; former silver badminton medalist (& now BBC broadcaster) Gail Emms; head of social media for BBC sport Lewis Wiltshire; and BBC sport correspondent, James Pearce.

Passionate, lively & interesting, discussion focused on the differences between athelete and journalists' use of Twitter, endorsements, privacy, how social media should be integrated into broadcasting, dual screen, and breaking stories on Twitter.

Zac and Mark even brought their gold medals!

Very clever (and very well done) dissection and analysis of Mark Zuckerberg's letter to Facebook investors from Rory Cellan-Jones, done as a series of Facebook comments. Well worth reading.

What role does a press release play in comms today? Interesting piece on the future of PR distribution.

Meaningful comms have to be based on relationships, tailored outreach, understanding your target audience and digital engagement, IMO.

ok, let's have another go at it!
Broadly I think the site is clean and I like the standard layout. There's a vast amount of information in there and Ithink you've adopted a sensible way if segmenting it all.

I'd agree with Pete on the drop-down menu.. I'm finding it a little irritating. Mainly because there's a long enough delay before it animates (I mean from the closed state) that you end up clicking on the heading and it whisks you off just as you see the menu open.
When the menu is in the open state, I'd rather it stayed that way if I hover over the 'home' menu.

The careers page looks different and the top-level menu animation is switched off on that page which causes confusion. Could you pre-load the images that form the background of the various drop-down menus? They don't seem to be caching and they look pretty simple so I'd doubt they take long to cache up front.

The deeper level links that run over more than a single line run together a little - probably adjust the line height a tad. Eg - Inside the BBC/Management Structure/Senior Management

I'm being a bit picky here I know! As I say overall it's well presented.
If I had one gripe it's with the main menu animation - I'm still finding I'm having trouble navigating the site using it.

There's a started for 10 anyway. It turns out I now have to go out and eat curry so I'll leave it there for now.

Have a great weekend,

Andrew

BBC iPlayer is now live on Xbox 360, for free! Includes voice & gesture for the first time. The head of iPlayer, Dave Price, blogs here about the service, with a nice video showing you how it works on Xbox.
