Recent figures from the Renewable Energy Association show significant increases in the number of renewable energy sector jobs in 2013-14, with the most significant improvement in the biomass sector where there has been a 19% rise. Employment in the biomass boiler installation and servicing sector grew 19.3% from 4,510 to 5,379, while employment in biomass production grew 10.6% from 8,960 to 9,913.

Julian Morgan-Jones, MD of South East Wood Fuels Ltd and Chairman of the Wood Heat Association said "we very much welcome the publication of these figures which show the increasing importance of the biomass sector to local UK economies. We are equally pleased and proud that this reflects the increased use of low carbon biomass heating for private, commercial and public sector buildings and is another step to meeting the UKs' carbon reduction targets".

Earlier this week I visited the New Haven Energy Recovery Facility. It's a really fantastic facility preventing 210,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste going to landfill.

It produces 400mW of electricity which is enough to supply 25,000 houses. It's a huge shame that it also puts out 1.3GW of heat EVERY DAY!! into the atmosphere enough for about 19,400 homes and this is just one tiny power station. Imagine the heat being wasted from all the UK power stations.

This goes to illustrate the urgent need for heat networks and to base power generation in smaller plants near bigger industrial and housing centers.

Updated 27/02/2015

Latest degression rates announced for new tariffs from April 1st 2015 sees ND (Non-Domestic) RHI small biomass and domestic RHI biomass tariff rates dramatically cut. ND Small biomass will be reduced by 15% to 5.87p/kWh (tier 1) and 1.56p/kWh (tier 2) from 6.8p/kWh and 1.8p/kWh respectively bringing it much more into line with the medium level tariff. Domestic rates have been cut by 20% from 10.98p/kWh to 8.93p/kWh.

Full degression data can be found on the link below

On the recent ND degression figures, SEWF's opinion is that this is not entirely bad.  The existing rates have focused interest and sales in the sub-200kW range. Our hoped for outcome is that this will now switch to the installation of bigger boilers in the 200- 999kW range where there is still a huge untapped market.  That said the industry needs to increase the level of awareness of wood heating within the industrial /commercial sectors as this boiler range has not been a big part of RHI applications to date.

Julian Morgan-Jones, MD of South East Wood Fuels Ltd. has been re-elected as chairman of the Wood Heat Association board. Julian said, "I am privileged to have been elected for a second time by my board colleagues to this role and thank them for the confidence they have shown in me. I am pleased to be working with such a capable and enthusiastic team. We have got some big challenges ahead of us as the industry grows. With this new board, our members and the REA team behind us I am confident that we can achieve great things for this industry."

The Wood Heat Association is currently focused on ensuring that the industry continues to grow to help the country and the government to meet our climate change targets. With this aim the WHA's key goals for this year are;

to secure a significant settlement for the renewed RHI budget post March 2016 to ensure that as the industry matures it has the right quality practices and standards in place to make sure that every customers experience of wood heating is overwhelmingly positive
to make our industry know what we are doing and to encourage them to add their voices ours to let UK industry know what value wood heating and the RHI has to offer.  It is still one of the countries best kept secrets!
