I do it during baseball games. Sports are more fun to watch with someone than alone (esp. in-person and esp. with baseball, with lots of pauses between the action). Watching while paying attention to social media can get a little too intense sometimes though. Criticizing the play-by-play announcer is easy when you have time to think through what you're saying, and some people (me too sometimes) are quite emotionally invested about something they have zero control over. Being part of a conversation, even sitting at home on the couch by myself, outweighs the tension from the hardcore partisans. I shift back and forth between wanting to do the "second screen" thing and just watching the game. I think next year I'll decide which games are spent also watching Twitter and which games I'll just enjoy on my own.

A few weeks ago I read a great article about how, in the early days of TV, the viewers at home were always watching action in front of and alongside an in-studio audience.

Then technology evolved and that live audience was relegated to game shows.

With the emergence of social media, people watch live television and simultaneously read and post to Twitter. This is a return to that idea of an audience watching an audience watching the action.

Two questions:

a) Does anybody remember the article I'm talking about?

b) Do you do this watch live TV + tweet (or read Twitter)? If so, why do you do it?

How do I get my IP address off a list from Google which says I'm making automated queries? This happens when I tunnel through my American server. Is there anything I should look for on my server that might (very unlikely) be actually doing automated queries?

https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/86640 is a working link, and there's a contact us link at http://support.google.com/websearch/bin/request.py?&contact_type=ban but I've already tried that. Sending another request, I guess.

Automatic hashtags are opt-out, not opt-in: https://support.google.com/plus/answer/3120322

Finally got as a habit Cmd-Shift-M to switch users in Chrome. The way I remember is is that a new Incognito mode window is Cmd-Shift-N. I don't like re-assigning keyboard shortcuts, but might have to make an exception for minimize, which I hardly ever use (I'd assign it no shortcut).

I'm getting Google’s warning that I’ms sending automated queries when tunnelling (which starts automatically when connected to an unsecured network). I'd like to think that I keep a close enough eye on my VPS that there's no malware on it. I sent my server’s IP address to https://support.google.com/websearch/contact/ban as recommended by https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/86640

In the meantime, I'm using Bing when searching. I wonder if there's a ControlPlane AppleScript that will change my browser's search engine based on whether Sidestep is tunnelling me through my server in California, and then change it back when I disconnect...

Good to see that the folks at Google don't take themselves too seriously: the Personal Blocklist extension shows Matt Cutts as an example to block the extension overview screenshots: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/personal-blocklist-by-goo/nolijncfnkgaikbjbdaogikpmpbdcdef

I am now part of the club that clicked on the wrong thing at one point and now have two profiles on one Google account and have to switch between the two to do stuff. There's a way out (to merge the profiles), but the light is pretty far down the tunnel.

What will be the total cost in productivity of this game on Google's front page? Uh, I mean, I won candy on the #googlebirthday doodle! Score: 153

A friend endorsed me as knowledgeable in SEO on LinkedIn, and I removed that endorsement it thinking "No, don't need people finding me to do SEO work for them." Also, my SEO knowledge is current as of 2004 (optimizing for Gmail's Primary Inbox is the new SEO, anyway), when I won a search engine optimization contest. http://www.movableblog.com/archives/2004/07/07/xoduszero and http://www.movableblog.com/archives/2004/08/11/contest

I still have and use the monitor I won in that contest. The words I'm currently typing are currently appearing on it!
