In my opinion, this is the best Japanese in Boston. I'm fairly particular about Japanese food. I prefer restaurants owned and run by Japanese, because I feel their attention to the freshness of the fish and general details is higher. Toraya falls in this category, being owned by a Japanese man who buys and prepares his own fish. Everything is delicious, every time. Not the fanciest of meals, like Oishii and Oga. No long lists of rolls with everything under the sun. Just super fresh, well prepared real Japanese sushi. My only negative comment is that the actual slices of fish are sometimes sloppily prepared as compared with Japanese chefs I've experienced in Japan, New York, or LA. Sometimes smaller portions of fish with ragged edges show up. On the other hand, I'd MUCH rather have smaller portions of amazing fish than huge slabs of less fresh fish... A personal favorite: the clear clam broth soup. Super delicate with a trace of lemon.
