This is a common question we are asked. If your tank has leaked, there will be holes in the oil tank, stains in the soil and youโ€™ll be obviously able to see it. If the removed oil tank fails inspection by the NJDEP, they will open a case number and at that point you will know that you need to clean up the soil and then test it afterwards to show that the soil is now clean after you performed the remediation. We make dealing with leaky tanks as hassle-free as possible by taking care of all of these steps for you ๐Ÿ™Œ

Only individuals or firms such as ERC Environmental that have received certification from the NJDEP are permitted to perform services on oil tanks. The NJDEP highly recommends removing all heating oil tanks that are out of service, regardless of whether there is any evidence that the tank has leaked. In this published bulletin, they point out the fact that abandoned oil tanks should be removed in most cases as well. This is because even if the tank has been abandoned properly, insurance and mortgage companies simply do not want to take on the risks associated with underground oil tanks.

Your oil tank's lifespan is not always straightforward!

While you may think of indoor and above-ground oil tanks as being relatively safe to corrosive elements, they are prone to other factors. For instance, these oil tanks often experience wide ranges of temperature within short spans of time that lead to condensation on the oil tankโ€™s interior. This water eats away at the steel. Of course, in the case of an outdoor above ground oil tank, rain and sprinklers make the issue of water even worse. Additionally, depending on where the oil tank is stored and how it is supported, sometimes surrounding objects and elements can put pressure on the tank and cause cracks over time.

Things you should know about oil tank corrosion:

โš The aging process happens from the inside out, so the corrosion is not always conspicuous.
๐Ÿ’ฐAs the inside of the tank corrodes, it can clog filters, impact air quality, and increase heating bills.
๐Ÿ“ˆOutdoor, underground tanks corrode faster than tanks located in any other area, due to the effect that the soil can have on the outer shell of the tank.

The only way to ensure that a property never encounters an oil leak is to remove the tank from the property altogether! ๐Ÿšœ
