Golden Proportion Rule in Cosmetic Dentistry
The Golden Proportion Rule, or "Divine Rule", refers to the ratio 1 to 1.618. This ratio has long been used in a multitude of applications in the arts and architecture for centuries. The Golden Proportion Rule has also been applied to facial aesthetics and #cosmeticdentistry to provide a mathematical guideline for the creation of aesthetically pleasing smiles. In order to achieve the best aesthetic result, the Golden Proportion Rule must be changed or adapted for each patient.

Natural teeth rarely follow the Golden Proportion Rule, and strict application of the ratio 1 : 1.618 can result in an unnatural looking #smile with excessive narrowness of the upper arch and compression of lateral segments. Therefore, it is necessary to adapt or modify the Golden Proportion Rule according to each individual patient. Modification is achieved by using a mathematical formula to determine an ideal ratio in function of #Phi . The width of the patient's central incisors and the inter-molar distance between the buccal sides of the left and right first upper molars are measured to calculate a modified proportion for the patient's smile. The greater the inter-molar distance, the smaller the ratio becomes.
