3. Jeepers. I come from the Dark Times Before, when creating your own TTRPG was more or less simultaneous with playing them, because no one had all the books and no one had properly read all the books they had.

I think my first game design was a sort of cargo-cult D&D that I ran for a couple of friends at camp the summer I was 12 years old. Tom Lopez had run D&D for me, my brother, his sister, and his brother, in the back of the van on the way home from his house, which gave me my context for play, and then I'd gotten the Red Box when I went to visit my grandmother for Passover on the annual pilgrimage to Toys R' Us (RIP). But, of course, I didn't have that with me at camp. But I'd told people I could DM, and so I improvised. It was, in a real sense, actual game design, though, since the other problem was no dice. So, we came up with the idea of just flipping a coin as a randomizer, and basically a rudimentary idea of stakes-setting - what made it not just "50% chance of doing anything" was that what you could accomplish with a success, or a crit (two heads in a row) was set by the context. It also cemented my gonzo GMing tendencies - I don't remember everything, but I remember one character was a crystal golem full of lava, there was a vast underground world, the PCs made friends with crab people, and at one point I let them buy lightsabers.

I still don't design professionally, so I'm not sure there's another layer to my origin story (though I did get paid once) but I guess like lots of folks I'd trace my renewed interest in design to learning about the Forge from Kirt Andrew Dankmyer. I told Bill for his oral history project that I thought I'd joined in 2004/5, based on when I started gaming with Kirt, but after that convo I went back to look at the archives, and it seems I was only there by 2007. Memory is fickle.

Granada field trip, part 2. Most of these are from around the Colegio Santo Domingo or Joe Strummer Plaza.

We started setting up a Burning Wheel have last night. With careful minmaxing I was able to make a troll who can walk around in sunlight, pass as human, and has exponents in both Midwifery and Illumination. But has no shoes.
