Sandstone is the single most common "rock" found on Earth, but it is more of a classification and less of a "rock". It is a notable building material, and is found used as such the world over, though it is rarely ever recognized as a beautiful due to our ability to ignore that which we see the most.

As a sand bed is compressed over time, it becomes a snapshot of ancient history. The spongelike stone is capable of capturing fossils, directions of water flow, and numerous minerals that have been dissolved in the water it encounters.

The physical makeup of Sandstone is where it obtains it's name, but surprisingly not due to only containing sand. The Sandstone is named for containing sand sized materials, which are all eventually cemented together through immense pressure.

A sandstone may be uplifted to the surface through natural means such as erosion, or through human interaction such as digging or mining.

Once it is exposed to the elements, it will begin to be slowly broken down by weather back into sand. This sand may be eventually deposited in a sand bed that then subsides, turns back to sandstone, once again returns to the surface, breaks down into sand again, and so on.

Though this started as a simple backyard photography exercise, I learned a valuable lesson in the value of appreciating the potential of the items closest to home, which are often over looked or ignored.

From a distance.... The Earth looks blue and green....
One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the Earth-orbiting International Space Station, flying some 225 nautical miles above the Caribbean Sea in the early morning hours of July 15, photographed this north-looking panorama that includes parts of Cuba, the Bahamas and Florida, and even runs into several other areas in the southeastern U.S. The long stretch of lights to the left of center frame gives the shape of Miami. http://buff.ly/1qIBBeb
