I have been a hobby aquarist for many years. While living out west, I spent countless hours at Tropical World. The owners were informative and helpful. I even had the shop build a custom fish tank for me. I purchased a few julidochromis transcriptus from Tropical World and grew them out until I had a breeding pair. They graciously took back the fish that did not pair off for store credit. The pair produced maybe 20 beautiful fry a month that I would bring in for store credit and use for food and supplies. Their knowledge is extensive and they even ordered recommended fish for me to keep. I look forward to visiting their new location when I make it back out west.

The folks at Tropical World actually try to revive and save the lives of struggling fish, so yes they may have a few sketch fish from time to time. The reason Petsmart may appear to be better is because the second a fish shows any sign of struggle, disease, or illness they just kill the entire species. These people at Tropical World are knowledgeable and can help one make an appropriate decision for their aquarium's needs

hey sierra i would not buy from this store even if my life depended on it cause they have had animal control called on them 14 times in just 1 month. okay thats not what i want to see on a pets store reputation. okay so no you need too understand that yes animals are a BIG responsibleity. but i can tell you this if montana were to have aspca that place would be shut down in a heart beat. you need to under stand that there are spific rule and regulation both in state and federaly that those people are not following. this store needs to be cleaned up the animals need to be give proper liveing conditions. all i have to say is that if you were to take an animal home would you let it live in the same conditions?

Awful is the only word I can think of. Dirty floors, dirty cages, dirty water, dirty everything. All the animals looked really unhealthy and ill. There were two large red birds that broke my heart to see wasting away in filth. There were TONS of rats and all of them were fat, lethargic, and dirty. Many of them, including the birds too, had wounds. The cages had obviously not been cleaned despite the fact that several of the female rats were giving birth in the same cages as the other rats. Lastly, there was an alligator lying in a tiny pool of stagnant algae-green water, which was not enough to cover his whole body. Will never go back again. Cannot believe such a place exists right here in town.

I've worked with exotic birds for over 20 years. I've helped run a bird store in California and have had birds in my life my entire life. Every bird in this store was stressed beyond belief. Most were pulling feathers. None had their nails trimmed whatsoever which prevents them from gripping the perches properly. One looked to have an eye infection and the lady tried to reassure me that he was old and had scratched his eye. There was a really well tempered scarlet macaw in the back that was so attention starved and stressed. All the tail feathers were shredded. Many had overgrown beaks. I would NEVER buy anything from this business. It was a disgrace and animal control would have a field day in there.

Tropical world upon first entrance looks to be as reviewed; a place that is hazardous to pets health. I think this could be the case with their canine inhabitants, but I also feel that way about all pet store dogs living in mini boxes. I do however greatly disagree with the comments on the fish living in this store. You do see the occasional floater in a tank, but I think the majority of the sickness/death you see is from less informed (over their head) hobbyists who have to rush fish back to the store when their pets go belly up. These people are very open to trying to bring sick fish back to health. No where is this better showcased than in their large cichlid tanks. You'll see numerous wounded veterans frolicking together after surely being near death in their lives. I've never introduced any diseases to my home tanks by adding wish from TW. In Missoula that is a tall order, Pet Smart may appear to have nicer thanks, but all Pet Smarts tanks share the same water, and you can almost guarantee parasites will hitchhike into yours if you buy from Pet Smart. Support Tropical world, it will be impossible to obtain healthy parasite free fish in this town if they go under.

I wouldn't recommend shopping here at all. Not only will you probably be bringing home an unhealthy pet, you'll be supporting this terrible business. The conditions they keep their animals in are bordering abusive and, in my opinion, certainly inhumane. I checked it out because I needed some specialty fish care and advise, however, I didn't even see anybody when I walked in. I decided to take a look around, figuring that the workers were probably busy. I soon saw that this is NOT the place to look for fish care advice or products. Their own fish are in TERRIBLE conditions. The larger ones are in terribly overcrowded tanks and many have open sores and other disfigurements. In many tanks, there will be dead fish rotting away that have obviously been there for more than a few days. Most of the tanks are filthy. The birds are stressed beyond belief. The whole place is depressing. I think Walmart takes better care of their fish. I would only recommend coming to this hell hole if you are interested in seeing what a wide variety of fish inflictions and illnesses look like. You'll get to see a broad range of them - if you can see through cloudy tanks. Besides all this, their customer service is terrible too. They never once offered to help or even said 'Hello'.
