I was delighted to read Ernst & Young’s recently released Sydney Housing Conversations Report, which recommends we talk about housing accessibility, rather than affordability alone. This slight shift will allow us to explore new solutions to the complex housing issue. Why focus on affordability alone, if we can improve accessibility at the same time? We have existing housing stock that's not being used & we have the tools to make connections between home owners & home seekers. Thank you, Andrew Price, Glen Granger & Bonnie Barker from EY for your insights. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/time-ask-right-questions-housing-ludwina-dautovic/

START UP DAILY - Though Airbnb may have normalised the practice staying in a stranger’s house, various groups have been doing it for much longer – think nannies, for example. Looking to bring the idea of staying in someone’s house in exchange for performing various odd jobs or services around the place is The Room Xchange.

Monash Leader says Home-share site a 'great solution' to cutting costs.

For Grant Crough, there’s been nothing better than finding a solution to housing affordability in Glen Waverly. Mr Crough, a Host on The Room Xchange, embraced a new way of simplifying life and reducing costs. The online marketplace connects people who have a spare room in their house with guests who are willing to provide some help in exchange for board.

For Robyn and Grant Taylor who have six kids and run the Nyora Woods BnB and a glamping business in Eltham, the workload with cleaning was becoming too much to handle.

“Our BnB is like a 5-star resort. It has an outdoor cinema, 4ft bath, gazebo, pool, spa, tennis court, bushland, etc,” said Grant.

The Room Xchange aims to change the way we live by re-creating the definition of cost-effective living and being a part of a community. As the cost of living is increasing, apartments are becoming smaller and more expensive. Xchange aims to promote a social, economic and an environmentally sustainable living space where a person can live with a host for three months or longer. In exchange for housing and food, the guest gives the host about 14 hours a week of help around the house.

A new Australian startup that launched this week lets people sign up for free mid to long term accommodation by offering their labour to help out around the house.
The Room Xchange platform works like a mixture of Airtasker and AirBnB — no money can be exchanged between host and guest, but the boarder offers labour for tasks the host puts on their profile, such as babysitting, gardening and cooking, for up to 14 hours per week.

The Room Xchange is challenging Australia’s Housing Affordability Crisis

“Taking a leaf from the book of inspirational businessman Sir Richard Branson, who says that “a business is simply an idea to make other people’s lives better,” Ludwina Dautovic has seized a golden opportunity. While others have been speculating about an uncertain future marked by the glaringly obvious housing affordability crisis, Ludwina has come up with a solution.
