CURCUMIN STUDIES
I was reading a blog posted by Harriet Hall, co-author of “Consumer Health: A Guide to Intelligent Decisions”. She is a retired Air Force physician and flight surgeon, writes and educates about “pseudoscientific and so-called alternative medicine.”

To give an example of the blatant lies that people like this feed the public and colleagues, in her post Turmeric/Curcumin: The “Natural Remedy of the Century” or a Waste of Money?
(http://www.csicop.org/specialarticles/show/turmeric_curcumin_the_natural_remedy) she states; “Conclusion: You Can Depend on it for Flavor but not for Health Benefits”, based on ONE published article that the authors themselves state to be a ‘Mini Perspective”, not a study as claimed by Harriet Hall. In this article the authors state “To our knowledge, compound 1 has never been shown to be conclusively effective in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial for any indication”, then cite an article as reference that has nothing to do with Curcumin, but deals with the Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials.
The authors then proceed to flout the very basic principles mentioned in the citation, how ironic. Of the 11918 studies as listed by Pubmed dealing with Curcumin, they cherry-pick a few to form their perspective.

Following are just a few non cherry-picked studies that can be found at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed

Collectively, our observations suggest that the combination of curcumin and metformin may improve chemopreventive efficacy against oral squamous cell carcinoma through a CSC-associated mechanism. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28618017

MicroRNA: A Novel Target of Curcumin in Cancer Therapy - It has been shown that curcumin has a variety of pharmacological effects such as antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial activities. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28617957

CUR is currently used in the treatment of many disorders, especially in those involving an inflammatory process. CUR and modified derivatives have been shown to have potent anti-cancer effects, especially on cancer stem cells
Effects of resveratrol, curcumin, berberine and other nutraceuticals on aging, cancer development, cancer stem cells and microRNAs. CUR is currently used in the treatment of many disorders, especially in those involving an inflammatory process. CUR and modified derivatives have been shown to have potent anti-cancer effects, especially on cancer stem cells (CSC). https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28611316

Hepatoprotective Effect of Curcumin on Hepatocellular Carcinoma Through Autophagic and Apoptic Pathways - Curcumin leads to protection against TAA induced HCC up to the first dysplastic stage through activating autophagic pathway and inhibiting apoptosis. Also, the antioxidant activity of curcumin almost prevents liver fibrosis. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28611265

Photodynamic Treatment of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cells with Low Curcumin Concentrations - The present findings substantiate the potential of the combination of low curcumin concentrations and light as a new therapeutic concept to increase the efficacy of curcumin in the treatment of cancer of the oral mucosa. http://www.jcancer.org/v08p1271.htm

Transforming Growth Factor β1-Induced NADPH Oxidase-4 Expression and Fibrotic Response in Conjunctival Fibroblasts - The present study suggests that TGFβ1-mediated production of collagen by conjunctival fibroblasts involves Nox4-derived H2O2 pathway and this effect of Nox4 is abrogated by curcumin. This mechanism might be exploited to prevent fibrotic scarring after surgeries and chemical burn injuries in the eye. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28605812

Antibacterial Activity of Curcumin Against Periodontopathic Bacteria - Bacterial growth was suppressed almost completely at very low concentrations of curcumin. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26447754

Anticancer effect of curcumin inhibits cell growth through miR-21/PTEN/Akt pathway in breast cancer cell - The present study has for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, revealed the anticancer effect of curcumin in suppressing breast cancer cell growth, and has elucidated that the miR-21/PTEN/Akt signaling pathway is a key mechanism for the anticancer effects of curcumin. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28599484

Recent progress on curcumin-based therapeutics: a patent review (2012-2016). part ii: curcumin derivatives in cancer and neurodegeneration - Due to the synergistic binding to several networked targets, curcumin turned out to be suitable for polypharmacological approaches, and its “privileged structure” could also provide the key scaffold to develop novel multipotent drugs useful for treating multifactiorial pathologic conditions such as cancer and neurodegeneration. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/13543776.2017.1339793

Prdx6 Upregulation by Curcumin Attenuates Ischemic Oxidative Damage via SP1 in Rats after Stroke - Prdx6 upregulation by Cur treatment attenuates ischemic oxidative damage through SP1 induction in rats after stroke. This represents a novel mechanism of Cur-induced neuroprotection against cerebral ischemia. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5449737/

Curcumin induces autophagic cell death in Spodoptera frugiperda cells - The present study proves that curcumin induces autophagic cell death in Sf9 insect cell line and this is the first report of cytotoxic effect of curcumin in insect cells and that will be utilized as natural pesticides in future. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28595926

Curcumin reduces the risk of chronic kidney damage in mice with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis by modulating endoplasmic reticulum stress and MAPK signalling - Taken together, our results suggest that curcumin preserves the renal function, probably by attenuating the ER stress mediated MAPK signaling. - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28595079

Curcumin Anti-Apoptotic Action in a Model of Intestinal Epithelial Inflammatory Damage - In conclusion, curcumin pre-treatment can protect intestinal cells from inflammatory damage. These results can be the basis for studying the preventive role of curcumin in inflammatory bowel diseases. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28587282

This is the ethical question that should NOT be determined by the ultimate profit motive that seems to drive the pharmaceutical industry.

This brilliantly researched article goes a long way in showing how different pieces of legislation are being used to lay the ground for Biopiracy at a grand scale in South Africa, in the process removing or transgressing many basic human rights as determined by UN declarations and placing our knowledge and raw materials of traditional healing in the hands of large corporations. The recent deal between Novartis and the SA government is but another link in the chain.
