"Focus" finds Will Smith back in fine form, and while it's a fun comic caper some plot developments don't hold up. http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainment/ci_27595590/review-focus-not-sharp-it-could-be
'Focus,' with Will Smith and Margot Robbie, is an entertaining and sexy comic caper, despite how it strains credibility and leans too heavily on plot contrivances that don't hold up.

Spend your money pennies on "Kingsman: The Secret Service." Colin Firth makes one dapper super spy. Watch out 007. #kingsmanthesecretservice
Colin Firth is at the top of his game playing a dapper superspy in 'Kingsman: The Secret Service,' a violent, martini-laced toast to James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer.

No Ava DuVernay? No David Oyelowo? No thanks, Oscars. Here are just some of the snubs from this morning's Academy Awards announcement.
“The Lego Movie,” “Gone Girl,” “Interstellar,” Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams and Jennifer Aniston are other conspicuous misses.

'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part I': 'Third Person,' 'Amazing Spiderman 2' among 2014's films that could have and should have been so much better.

Before you head to that Oscar party tonight might want to check out my picks for what's going to win. Go "Boyhood," J.K. Simmons, Julianne Moore, Eddie Redmayne and, of course, Patricia Arquette! If Mark Ruffalo won, in a tie,  I'd be happy too! #academyawards
'Birdman,' 'Boyhood' strong contenders for best picture; Julianne Moore and C.K. Simmons front-runners in top acting categories.

Celebrate the indie film at SF IndieFest. Here are five films worth checking. Let's hear it for "F R E E"!
From the inspiring 'F R E E' to the creepy 'Black Mountain Side' to the charming and illuminating 'Beyond Clueless,' IndieFest is packed with low-budget gems.

From the dominance of non-network TV shows to 'Birdman's' shocking loss in best film comedy category, the ceremony offered plenty of surprises

Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" only tells part of the story, and that undermines its real power.
'Unbroken,' the movie that director Angelina Jolie has brought to the screen with visual splendor and technical polish, spends too much time during Louis Zamperini's war years and not enough before and after.

Best Movies of 2014: 'Boyhood,' 'Babadook' make our list.
Some of the year's strongest films -- 'Selma,' 'A Most Violent Year' and 'Mommy' -- won't have opened in the Bay Area before Dec. 31, which disqualified them from this list.

Introduction
I love movies, I love to write and I love to work out and help others get into shape. So I'm pursuing all these passions at once. I freelance movie reviews for the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times and Oakland Tribune. And I'm a certified personal trainer, a TRX-trained instructor, and spin instructor. I'm a health coach and trainer at UC-Berkeley's RSF, Truve, and also work at the Downtown Berkeley YMCA. When I'm not watching movies, teaching, personal training, you'll likely find me out on my bike or running up hills.
