Sundance review: "Audrie & Daisy" demands to be seen by parents. But it's really boys who need to learn from  this powerful, damning look at cyberbullying and how it destroys lives.
'Audrie & Daisy,' which premiered at Sundance recounts two high-profile cyberbullying cases, including that of Saratoga High School sophomore Audrie Pott, who in 2012 committed suicide after she was assaulted and photos were shared on social media.

Epic filmmaking is right. "The Revenant" is one of the most visceral experiences you'll have at the movies. It makes you experience the cold and feel the double threat of nature and man. http://tinyurl.com/gnrr26x
Alejandro González Iñárritu's 'The Revenant' is at its best when it re-creates the story's volatile natural setting and explores the treachery of its brutal, unforgiving landscape. But when it ventures into emotional territory, it's almost as frozen as its setting.

Best of 2015 movies: "Spotlight," Mya Taylor and George Miller collect awards from the San Francisco Film Critics Circle. Find out who else won.
While 'Spotlight' grabbed best film honors, 'Mad Max: Fury Road' was the top winner with three awards, including best director, by the San Francisco Film Critics Circle.

Astonishing. That word best describes "Room" and its two powerhouse performances from Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay. It's a harrowing premise but it's actually a life-affirming drama. It's also easily one of the best films of 2015.
Based on Emma Donoghue's best-seller, out of a horrific scenario comes a sensitively told story of a mother's love and her son's resilience.

Is "The Visit" better than "The Happening" and "After Earth"? Absolutely. But even though it's fun, it still has some issues.http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainment/ci_28782928/review-visit-m-night-shyamalan-is-back-game
Shyamalan demonstrates he's on the right path with 'The Visit,' a trippy mockumentary genre mashup that revisits such haunts as 'Hansel and Gretel,' 'The Blair Woods Project' and the 'Paranormal Activity' franchise.

Jason Segel is sensational as David Foster Wallace in the perceptive "The End of the Tour." http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainment/ci_28590038/review-end-tour-tour-de-force-jason-segal
'The End of the Tour,' James Ponsoldt's perceptive and humor-laced film about David Foster Wallace, explores the crushing reality of fame, along with the jealousies and insecurities of writers in general.

It might be flying low on everyone's radar, but "Yosemite" is a little find. One of James Franco's finer efforts.
Film starring James Franco and based on his stories evokes an era of change in Silicon Valley, 1985

Best Movies of 2015: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Straight Outta Compton" make the list. But what landed the top spot on our list?
'Mad Max,' 'Ex Machina,' 'Star Wars' all shine in what was a strong year for sci-fi films; 'Spotlight,' 'Tangerines' and 'Love & Mercy' also were top efforts.

"Spotlight" is not only one of the best films of 2015, it's also one of the most important ones. Perfectly executed in every way. Go out of your way to see this film.
Finely drawn characters re-create the Boston Globe's expose of sexual abuse in the clergy

"Bridge of Spies" illustrates how Spielberg and company are master craftsmen at re-creating history. Mark Rylance is worthy of an Oscar nomination.
Smart, detailed spy drama showcases high-caliber performances from Tom Hanks and especially stage actor Mark Rylance (seen in the BBC's 'Wolf Hall').

"A Walk in the Woods" with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte is an amiable and quite funny odd-couple comedy.
The chemistry between Robert Redford and Nick Nolte among the best parts of this laugh-stuffed trek based on Bill Bryson's beloved memoir.

Nobody does it better than....Ethan Hunt? You decide if "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation" ranks right up there with one of the bet Bond films. Rebecca Ferguson should become a big star. http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainment/ci_28552002/review-rogue-nation-mission-impossible-franchise-finds-its
First 'Ghost Protocol,' and now 'Rogue Nation' show that the series has finally found the elusive balance of brains and brawn.

Introduction
I love movies, I love to write and I love to work out and help others get into shape. So I'm pursuing all these passions at once. I freelance movie reviews for the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times and Oakland Tribune. And I'm a certified personal trainer, a TRX-trained instructor, and spin instructor. I'm a health coach and trainer at UC-Berkeley's RSF, Truve, and also work at the Downtown Berkeley YMCA. When I'm not watching movies, teaching, personal training, you'll likely find me out on my bike or running up hills.
