Initial thoughts? "Wild" looks promising to me. Looking forward to seeing Reese Witherspoon in the part.
Reese Witherspoon stars in the adaptation of Cheryl Strayed's 2012 best-selling memoir.

Melissa McCarthy is hilarious in "Tammy." Ditto Kathy Bates and Susan Sarandon. Mark Duplass makes for an absolute charmer in this bumpy but fitfully funny road trip.
The fitfully funny road trip comedy features terrific supporting performances from Kathy Bates and Mark Duplass.

Shailene Woodley gives an Oscar-caliber performance in the beautiful, must-see romance "The Fault in Our Stars."
Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort are perfectly cast in this satisfying rendering of John Green's beloved novel, 'The Fault in Our Stars.'

"Palo Alto" puts Gia Coppola on the filmmaking map.
In adapting James Franco's novel, debut filmmaker Gia Coppola creates characters who aren't teen stereotypes.

Film buffs should really seek out "Life Itself," a moving tribute to Roger Ebert. It's  available on VOD and is also in theaters now.
We suspect the late great film critic would give Steve James' documentary a big thumbs up

In David Michod's "The Rover," the near future is far from bright. Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson are dynamite.
Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson are outstanding in 'The Rover,' filmmaker David Michod's anticipated follow-up to 2010s 'Animal Kingdom.'

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are bromantic fantastic in "22 Jump Street."
The buddy cop comedy doesn't make much sense, and it mainly recycles the original, but the chemistry of its stars and self-referential jokes make it a winner.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is a blast to the past. Even Richard Nixon pops up.
Fresh off 2011's terrific Cuban missile-crisis-themed 'X-Men: First Class,' Marvel's mutant characters are back in action for their biggest, most daring adventure yet.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is all over the map. But Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield and Dane DeHaan are terrific. http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainment/ci_25661827/review-amazing-spider-man-2-gets-snarled-its?source=nav
Standout performances from Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Dane DeHaan make the film worthwhile, but the plot is just too scattershot.

What I truly appreciate about the SF Film fest is how it celebrates global filmmaking. Here are 10 notable films in the fest, kicking off Thursday.
From 'Palo Alto' to 'Ping Pong Summer' to 'Chinese Puyzzle' to 'Coast of Death,' there's something for everyone at the always-eclectic annual film festival.

I freelance movie reviews for the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times and Oakland Tribune. And I"m a certified personal traiiner and indoor cycling instructor. I teach at UC-Berkeley's RSF, the Downtown Berkeley YMCA and Club One at the Oakland City Center.
