Chatted with Kate Beckinsale about Jane Austen, Whit Stillman and whether she'll be doing more "Underworld" movies. Here's what she had to say.
In 'Love & Friendship,' the British actress finds herself in the enviable position of receiving some of her best critical notices yet as Lady Susan, an upstart 18th-century social climber in an adaptation of a posthumously released Jane Austen novella.

Will it take Jake Gyllenhaal eating raw bison liver to land an Oscar? Hope not. He's outstanding in "Demolition," a none-too-subtle film about learning how to deconstruct so we can live again.
It's not easy to make a complicated character like 'Demolition's' Davis Mitchell sympathetic, especially as we watch him take a sledgehammer to his life. But from his poignant portrait of a gay cowboy in 'Brokeback Mountain to his transformation into a sleazy videographer in 'Nightcrawler,' we know Gyllenhaal is a fearlessly committed chameleon.

Want to engage in a lively discussion after seeing a movie? Then check out Matt Sobel's assured feature debut "Take Me to the River," opening in the S.F. Bay Area this weekend.
Filmmaker Matt Sobel, a San Jose native, takes big risks and makes them pay of in 'Take Me to the River,' his first feature film.

Review: "The Witch" will get you my pretties and your last nerve too!
'The Witch,' an award-winning film from the 2015 Sundance festival, will be compared to 'The Blair Witch Project,' also famously out of Sundance. But 'The Witch' is simply a much better film.

Sundance review: "Audrie & Daisy" demands to be seen by parents. But it's really boys who need to learn from  this powerful, damning look at cyberbullying and how it destroys lives.
'Audrie & Daisy,' which premiered at Sundance recounts two high-profile cyberbullying cases, including that of Saratoga High School sophomore Audrie Pott, who in 2012 committed suicide after she was assaulted and photos were shared on social media.

Epic filmmaking is right. "The Revenant" is one of the most visceral experiences you'll have at the movies. It makes you experience the cold and feel the double threat of nature and man. http://tinyurl.com/gnrr26x
Alejandro González Iñárritu's 'The Revenant' is at its best when it re-creates the story's volatile natural setting and explores the treachery of its brutal, unforgiving landscape. But when it ventures into emotional territory, it's almost as frozen as its setting.

"Sing Street" is my favorite film of 2016 so far. I love how upbeat it is and how it made me want to get up and dance and sing and go after big dreams.
Set in 1980s Ireland, 'Sing Street' is a toe-tapping valentine to the liberating power of music and is refreshingly unapologetic in its preference for dreamy optimism over weary cynicism.

Once again, Richard Linklater hits a grand slam with the period details for his latest, "Everybody Wants Some!!" Thoroughly enjoyed this nostalgic romp back in time to the '80s.
If you're expecting another 'Dazed and Confused,' Linklater's 1993 spot-on depiction of suburban high school life in the '70s, you might be disappointed. This semi-autobiographical affair about baseball jocks -- dubbed and promoted as the 'spiritual cousin' to 'Dazed' -- isn't in the same league.

Forget "The Revenant," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "The Big Short," "Spotlight" and so on. The best film I saw in 2015 was "Embrace of the Serpent." It's a work of art.
'Embrace of the Serpent,' a low-key yet powerful epic, demands to be seen on the biggest screen imaginable as it takes us on a unique and dazzling sensory journey that ebbs and flows between two narratives.

#deadpoolmovie  is dynamite. Ryan Reynolds owns this R-rated, irreverent superhero film.
'Deadpool,' known for his notoriously profane blabbermouth, katana swords and flip attitude, ribs and riffs off the superhero template. But what makes it work is that everyone is in on the joke.

It might be flying low on everyone's radar, but "Yosemite" is a little find. One of James Franco's finer efforts.
Film starring James Franco and based on his stories evokes an era of change in Silicon Valley, 1985

Best Movies of 2015: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Straight Outta Compton" make the list. But what landed the top spot on our list?
'Mad Max,' 'Ex Machina,' 'Star Wars' all shine in what was a strong year for sci-fi films; 'Spotlight,' 'Tangerines' and 'Love & Mercy' also were top efforts.
