Today, 15th of August, is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

According to Catholic belief (and dogma), the Virgin Mary’s body was taken straight to Heaven at her death. This event is known as the Assumption or the Dormition (the ‘Falling Asleep’). The commemoration of the Assumption is not only central to Marian devotion but also one of the most important celebrations in the Catholic calendar.

There are dozens of towns across Spain that celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, however, and although not exactly a celebration of the Assumption or even a religious festivity, the ‘Aste Nagusia’ of Bilbao (the Great Week of Bilbao) stands out, always starting the day after the Feast of the Assumption.

The week long party ends with the burning of the iconic symbol of the festivity: the Marijaia. The Marijaia is a large statue representing a large, plump dancing lady with her arms in the air.

'The Death of the Virgin' by Mantegna is part of the permanent collection of the Prado.

The Thyssen, as it is normally referred to, is Madrid’s third most important art museum and just across the street from the Prado Museum.

It is also most likely the best and most complete private collection of art in the world. Undoubtedly there are other great private art collections in the world; however, this is the only one that builds a chronological narrative with outstanding examples from each period and very few gaps. Indeed, visiting the museum is like strolling through the last 600 years of art history.

No other private collection presents anything similar.

Simply wonderful

and wonderful to see the Prado engage with contemporary artists and multimedia proposals

Farideh Lashai's* 'When I Count, There Are Only You… But When I Look, There is Only a Shadow' presents us with a gripping interpretation of Goya's 'Disasters of War' that is guaranteed to not leave you indifferent.

The work can be viewed until October 10th, so you have plenty of time!

A failed attempt

even though the idea was great and it could have been a spectacular exhibition.

'The Other’s Gaze. Spaces of difference' is described by the Prado Museum as a 'a reflection on the historical reality of same-sex relationships and non-normative sexual identities.' The exhibition runs until October 10th.

The exhibition presents an itinerary of 26 works, mainly from the Prado's permanent collection, that are spread throughout the museum and which are accompanied by a short commentary.

Problem #1 - The exhibition space is not visitor friendly as you are distracted by all the other works of art in the museum; likewise, navigating the Prado in search of the exhibition works can be a daunting task.

Problem #2 - The reflections are limited in most cases to a simple narrative of the story being told of the selected painting or sculpture. A more nuanced interpretation of the chosen works with more in-depth explanations of the artists and their social context would have been much more engaging; or in other words, explain why the selected works of art were made and what repercussions they had for the artists who made them.

Problem #3 - The exhibition image of the lion ('El Cid' by Rosa Bonheur) is so inappropriate it hurts.
