ISS to Test Space Debris Cleanup Satellite

Man-made space debris is becoming a problem for future and current space missions, including the International Space Station, in which so many nations have invested.

Finding ways to remove this debris is therefore of the highest priority, and in pursuit of this ambitious goal, the ISS has deployed and will soon begin testing the 220lb RemoveDEBRIS satellite.

Equipped with a net and harpoon for debris clean-up, it also contains a Vision Based Navigation system using 2D cameras and 3D LIDAR technology for tracking debris.

If successful, it may become the first of many such satellites, helping secure the future of space exploration for future generations to come.
