Accountability

Glen McQuirk

Every leader needs accountability partners.

One of the greatest distractions that face leaders is the temptation not to keep the main thing the main thing. Good ideas are never in short supply. Team members will easily and quickly contribute good and right ideas at critical times causing unnecessary delays and engaging resources that could be better applied to the vision. Having an accountabilty base, people who hold you accountable to your vision; or accountability partners, people who hold one another accountable to their dreams and aspirations; is crucial to maximizing your accomplishments and minimizing costly detours. A detour is always longer, rougher and more frustrating; costing you time and money. Generally you breathe a sigh of relief when you get back on track. An accountability team keeps on course. Stay on your chosen path. Meet your accountability partners regularly.

Who are your accountability partners? How often do you meet?

Mentorship

Glen McQuirk

You need the mentor; the mentor does not need you.

A mentor must be pursued. The mentor does not need you to grow, but rather you can benefit from the insights of a mentor. A leader may have multiple mentors. Mentors could be people who are currently living or who have lived long ago. Mentorship is received through time spent in the presence of a mentor through listening, reading, understanding and doing. A mentor is simply someone with different experiences to you. They can be older or younger than you, but will always be smarter in a particular aspect that you need to learn. My children and employees have often mentored me. If you are reading this at a MAPCAFE, you are participating in Group Mentorship. This process allows subtle mentorship to occur through the sharing of different experiences related to the topic by everyone in the group. If you want to be mentored, seek people to mentor.

Who are your mentors? Who can benefit from your mentorship?

P – Discover your Purpose

Glen McQuirk

Purposeful living is the secret to abundant life made possible by the release of inner potential.

The purpose for every created thing pre-existed its creation. This means that the creator of a thing knows the attributes it must possess in order to fulfill the reason for its existence. Consequently, when it is created, they are incorporated in its design and manufacture producing a fully competent creation. There are a few ways to discover the purpose of the created thing; observe the service it provides while in operation (the need it is meeting), understand its attributes and their collective potential (what they could be used for) or simply ask its creator (and get the answer directly). The created thing can never choose its purpose; it can only discover it. It operates at maximum efficiency, effectiveness and ease when it is fulfilling that which it was created to do. When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable. The result is a creation easily damaged, broken or neglected.

What questions should you be asking to whom to discover your purpose?

I – Exercise your Imagination

Glen McQuirk

Worry is the misuse or abuse of imagination.

Many people think they stopped using their imagination as a teenager. What they fail to recognise is how active their imagination really is. The only challenge is that during their teenage years they began to use this powerful ability in a counter-productive way, just like the generations before them have done. This negative use, imagining what can go wrong instead of what can go right, is called worry. It is so powerful it can cause stomach ulcers and even grow cancer. A high price to pay for constant never-ending worry. A leader chooses instead to focus on the opportunity in every adversity. Instead of thinking what if things go wrong, a leader thinks what if things go right. Imagination appears big because it produces what we deem to be impossible. Although we are impressed, our creator states that His plan for our lives is bigger than we can even think or imagine. Chew on that!

What have you dreamed that you wrote off as impossible?

S – Make the Sacrifice

Glen McQuirk

A leader makes investments that followers interpret as sacrifices.

An investment suggests a return whilst a sacrifice is associated with loss. An investment produces faith after value has been considered while a sacrifice develops fear because a price must be paid. Being confident that you can hit a golf ball onto the green produces a different result from being afraid of hitting it into the bunker. It is these small nuances that make a great difference. A leader understands this. The use or misuse of language either creates or destroys the future. A follower is so preoccupied with cost that he misses the value a leader sees. A follower spends while a leader invests. A follower waits for something to happen while a leader is making things happen. A follower blames others for his failures while a leader commends others for his success. A follower waits for opportunities to come while a leader prepares for them.

What are you currently doing to prepare for opportunity?

R – Look for the Revelation

Glen McQuirk

Revelation is the ultimate insight; its what lies beyond the obvious. It generates a deep commitment and resolve.

Revelation usually comes after long sustained purposeful thought or meditation. It often presents itself at a time and place of its own choosing. Its instantly recognisable and immediately activates an emotional response that seeks to be expressed in some way. It may meet with aggressive opposition such as ( almost audible) thoughts of doubt that seek to suppress and bury it in the deep recesses of your subconscious. A true leader easily and quickly recognises the value of these instantaneous inspired insights, using the energy generated by them to move forward faster and make a positive shift. The leader within you will develop a deaf ear to that small voice which so desperately wants you to turn a blind eye to these moments of inspiration. Never laugh them off as unattainable or unrealistic. People who do sink back into their comfort zone of lack and despair.

What revelation do you need to rescue from your inner graveyard?

E – Engineer your mind

Glen McQuirk

Generally it requires a different mind to solve a problem than the one who created it.

New perpective thinking is desperately needed in finding solutions to resolve issues that we ourselves create. Our minds are in need of an upgrade. It is important for us to learn new things. We can do this by listening to audio material, reading books, attending motivational and inspirational talks, and participating in seminars and workshops of a personal development nature. We are quick to look at the cost of these sources of input and consequently miss the incredible value that would be gained through the investment. What we put into our minds, no one can take away from us; we do not have an uninstall button. Everything we put in, good or bad, remains. Maybe its time we choose to put in more good. Study the GEMS in MAP4LIFE Blueprint and apply your resulting insights. See your world change. Mine did.

D – See your Destination

Glen McQuirk

VISION: Visible Imagination Shared Inspiringly Openly Non-stop

Moses effectively led the Israelites out of Egypt by clearly stating their destination, the promised land. Knowledge of the destination inspired over two million people to head out of slavery directly into a desert wilderness. The result of this step into faith was many miracles. Despite the overwhelming favour they experienced, they quickly lost sight of their destination and became consumed by the circumstances they found themselves in. They began to complain about the situation instead of focusing on their destination. The desert became their comfort zone, their home and their grave. Every one of them was fearful of the unknown; the false report of an invincible army of giants barricading their promised land kept them in hiding. Only two people saw the opportunity and not the obstacles, enabling them to prevent their situation becoming their destination. They walked in.

What situation have you allowed to become your destination?

A – Soar to great Altitudes

Glen McQuirk

Get excited when you feel turbulence; it means you are moving to a higher altitude.

The fasten seat belt sign is always switched on before takeoff. Turbulence is a necessary barrier that must be passed through in order to reach a high altitude where smooth flight can be experienced. Even here though, storms can cause some rough flying. An experienced leader knows that the pursuit of a worthy goal or destiny will always be interrupted by some turbulent air and is prepared for it. In fact, he seeks to break through this barrier time and again and uses it to gauge progress to a higher and higher level. A follower, on the other hand, sees a little shakeup as something to be avoided at all cost and will very quickly descend to a mediocre level of accomplishment in life. Tell your team to fasten their seat belts because you are about to move to a higher level. Switch the seat belt signs on. Power up the throttle. Take off. Most of the time turbulence is just a lot of hot air.

What turbulence are you experiencing? Are you ascending or descending?

E – Be an Explorer

Glen McQuirk

Be the first to leave a footprint.

Being the first to walk on a beach after it has been washed clean by a high tide is a exhilarating experience. It does something for your soul. When you look back over your shoulder, all you see is one set of footprints; yours. Somehow you feel something well up inside of you as you realize that no one else has ever set foot on that beach in its current form, but you. You feel a connection with the essence of life. You feel like you were born for this and wish you could do it more often. Perhaps you have just had an insight into the secret of how life should be lived. Maybe true leadership is about leading where no one else has dared lead before. It could be about having the courage to face your inner fears of the unknown and venture out like a child into a territory filled with beaches without footprints. You know the answer. Why not be a footprint maker?

Where are you planning to leave new footprints?
