Vaughan Bell rips into a spectacularly bad Daily Mail news story:
We’ve covered some dodgy neuroscience journalism in our time but The Daily Mail has such as amazing piece of tosh, I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be serious or the result of huffing bathroom cleaner. Now I try and avoid writing about The Daily Mail because it’s so science impaired it’s a bit like complaining that your pantomime horse won’t gallop properly. But this is just amazing. My cover feature, 'How to Build a Brain,' in the current issue of BBC Focus. It's about supercomputer simulations of the human brain and neuromorphic ( biologically-inspired) computer architectures.

Amazing brain fact: Cerebellar granule neurons outnumber the total number of cells in the cerebral cortex. That's why cerebellar medulloblastoma is the most common form of childhood brain cancer.

Since I'm convinced you've been wondering what the ratio of neuronal: non-neuronal cells is in the human brain, here it is! Based on the work, (and humbly scavenged from the website) of Dr. Suzana Herculano-Houzel.

Wow, what a great study! Textbooks are full of unreferenced factoids about how many neurons are in the brain, etc. This is the first contemporary and believable thing I've seen.
