My story today with Steve Mills. Key pieces of evidence in Jason Strong's murder case have been called into question in the years since a jury convicted him of murdering a woman who had not even been identified at the time of his trial. Now prosecutors are faced with new medical evidence that contradicts Strong's confession and the witness statements against him, raising questions about how Strong and multiple witnesses would provide police with similar, inaccurate details.
In the 14 years since Jason Strong was convicted of murder in Lake County, evidence has steadily emerged that clashes with the case against him.

Here's my story today. No one in court seemed to think William Woodard was guilty of a sex crime on the day he pleaded guilty.
Just before a Lake County judge asked William Woodard if he wanted to plead guilty, the prosecutor made an unusual admission in court about the strength of the evidence tying the defendant to the sexual assault of a 13-year-old acquaintance.

My story today. Rockie Douglas might have been in prison instead of causing a crash that killed an 11-year-old boy if his probation officers had known he kept getting arrested while he was on probation. They didn't.
If Rockie Douglas ' probation agents in Wisconsin had known he'd been charged with multiple crimes in Illinois, he might have been in prison Dec. 21. Instead, authorities allege, he fled police in a stolen car that barreled into an SUV in Chicago, killing an 11-year-old boy.

My story in Sunday's paper. How a small town's officials put themselves in a position to not be able to more seriously punish a cop who misused an official database and sent a sexual text message to a child.

My story today with Steve Mills. Waukegan police found and then destroyed a potential murder weapon whose discovery would have contradicted the original suspect's confession. That man, Juan Rivera, sat in prison for 18 more years before appeals judges, citing DNA evidence indicating his innocence, set him free. He confessed after a grueling four-day interrogation during which he had a psychotic episode.
Many mysteries surround the 1992 rape and killing of Holly Staker, the most important being who stabbed the 11-year-old baby sitter, particularly since DNA evidence led to the release of Juan Rivera...

Story I'm on right now. Evanston cops say bank robber killed by cops had murdered two men in smoke shop this summer.
Evanston police announced today they believe the man police shot and killed this week after a downtown bank robbery also is responsible for murdering two Evanston brothers in the basement of their tobacco shop this July.

My story today. Yet another serious felony case from Lake County has been invalidated by DNA. This man did 20 years in prison for a particularly horrific crime prosecutors now say he did not commit. DNA indicates the crime was committed by two men who escaped punishment for it.
Lake County prosecutors plan to exonerate a man who has spent 20 years in prison for rape and abduction, a move that would lengthen the list of the county's criminal convictions wiped away by DNA evidence.

My story today. Northwestern Law says, essentially, "Whoops, we let a felon convicted of bogus lawyering into a law school program," and then they kick him out. Then he sues them. Involves Texas, nudity, a man in a bathrobe trying to exercise police powers he doesn't have and Pizza Hut.
A few months before graduation day for a program geared toward international lawyers, Northwestern University School of Law made a discovery that a prestigious institution of legal education might...

My story. Bar association says prosecutor deserves award; men who spent a total of 40 years in prison for crimes DNA indicates they didn't commit disagree.
Former Lake County State's Attorney Michael Waller is expected to be simultaneously lauded and denounced Wednesday in Waukegan, where one group plans to give him an award and another faction plans...

A furor erupted after I reported a cop who asked a 12-year-old girl for "sexy pictures" of herself had been suspended for 30 days, not fired. As residents lashed the city, officials promised to see what more they could do. They say now the answer is "nothing."
Woodstock city officials have announced they won’t further punish a police sergeant who text messaged a 12-year-old girl to ask her to send him "sexy pictures."

Update on my story: Residents crowded the Woodstock City Council meeting and pelted city officials with criticism over the handling of a cop who texted a 12-year-old girl asking for "sexy pictures!" City council voiced disgust over the allegations, though it remained unclear after a late night closed-door session whether there will be any further action.
A line of Woodstock residents came forward to blast city officials Tuesday night over the handling of a police officer who was the focus of a recent investigation into a text message sent to a 12-year-old girl.
