Two belugas have died this week at the Vancouver Aquarium. Apparently they died from a gastrointestinal problem. I would like to launch into a rant about belugas dying in captivity but, of course, belugas die in the wild too.
So all I will say is this: For the last few years, I have had the pleasure of diving with belugas each summer in the wild. They are highly intelligent, , curious, playful, family oriented animals. They have a sophisticated vocabulary and a complex social structure.
Belugas clearly enjoy contact with humans - but on their terms. How anyone could put these animals in cages is beyond me.
I understand that not everyone has the opportunity to swim with belugas in the ocean but is that a good enough reason to trap one and put it in a plastic box for the rest of its life? Personally, I don't think so!
