Do snakes hibernate? 🤔🐍

We are well into the throngs of winter and the often-used line by people still finding snakes is “shouldn’t they be hibernating”? ❄️

To clear the air on this, the term hibernation is reserved for mammals whose endothermic bodies undergo a temporary “shut down” due to extremes of temperature and the near-absence of available food resources.

Snakes however, have the capacity to continue to remain active but to a much lesser extent than normal. This is usually associated with the reduction of available food resources and to escape temperature extremes and is better defined as a brumation rather than a hibernation.

The difference being that brumation can be entered into intermittently whereas hibernation is usually for an extended continual time-frame. Snakes actually have the capacity to remain at critically low temperatures for quite long periods of time. At this time of year, it’s not unusual to see a Carpet Python utilising the same location to bask and then reside to, as it does nothing more than maintain its thermal inertia during the cooler period.

Some species actually rely on this environmental cue to initiate the reproductive status of mature animals as they enter the warmer time of year 🌞☀️

This Carpet Python was found in a rangehood in Anstead. They can often take refuge in places you would least expect it!

Brisbane suburbs like The Gap see a high volume of Carpet Python activity. Here is another one we picked up recently and successfully relocated.
