A most incredible longread, ripping apart America's failed home front of the "war on drugs".

Blind belief among those supposed to be helping addicts is leading to the deaths of people who just want to recover.

The saddest part of this story is the number of tales told by those left behind, mostly parents, who just wanted to help but couldn't penetrate the industry that has developed around their troubled children.

Essential reading for anyone who thinks campaigning for this year's general election will be all about knocking on as many doors as possible.
This year’s general election will be the first national election in the United Kingdom where the use of online media in …

Nice piece on The Simpsons jumping the shark.
By this point, Homer had many unbelievable achievements under his belt. Three seasons earlier, he went to space. But it's not how absurd the moment is that qualifies it for jumping the shark. It's what impact the moment has on the show's character.

As the #mh17  coverage, naturally, moves on to diplomatic repercussions and the victims are increasingly talked about as a number - a single entity of 298 people - it is easy to forget how the incident will have decimated the lives of those left to mourn. This article is upsetting and difficult to read, but a worthwhile reminder of, ultimately, how meaningless diplomatic discourse and well-meaning ceremonies are for those directly affected.
The Western Australian parents of three children, who were killed with their grandfather on MH17, have released a heartbreaking statement.

Astonishing story of boy-boy twins that became boy-girl twins, and how the family learnt to handle society's, and their own, issues.
The twin boys were identical in every way but one. Wyatt was a girl to the core, and now lives as one, with the help of a brave, loving family and a path-breaking doctor’s care.

England find success looking up from the depths
England can win the World Cup, but then, that is what has always been so infuriating about the team. Irrationality is at the heart of football and never more so than when trying to translate opposing messages from heart and head into a sense of hope or, mor...

Few things are as exciting as a new Death Cab For Cutie song, but a new video from the group goes close.

Good read this: essay on the Garden State soundtrack that is also a paean to discovering new music before spotify and iTunes frantically lobbed recommendations at you.

Unlike many pieces looking back at a moment in history - cultural, sporting, a landmark event - this doesn't become weighed down in back-slapping nostalgia. It's almost as interesting reading a piece that has mastered that skill as much as it is interesting reading about the subject itself.
On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, and a long overdue release on vinyl , how one soundtrack kicked off the indie revolution and predicted the way we listen now.

How do you report on #MH17? I believe in showing viewers/readers/users as much as possible; unlike Hollywood news doesn't deal with the darkest parts of people's imaginations, news deals with the darkest parts of reality. No matter how horrendous pictures - still or moving - are, they are a representation of something real; no matter how uncomfortable that makes people.

However, the pictures from East Ukraine are devastating. Passengers young and old lie dead in a field, personal belongings strewn around them. Do you need to see the body of an infant slaughtered at 33,000 feet? But, do you need to illustrate how horrific this incident is to ensure outrage is provoked and answers demanded? It is a difficult decision that every news organisation is having to deal with. Vice News' Simon Ostrovsky and his team have done well to tread the line in the attached report. It is tough to watch, but sometimes (maybe more often?) news should be.
