How do you report on #MH17
? I believe in showing viewers/readers/users as much as possible; unlike Hollywood news doesn't deal with the darkest parts of people's imaginations, news deals with the darkest parts of reality. No matter how horrendous pictures - still or moving - are, they are a representation of something real; no matter how uncomfortable that makes people.
However, the pictures from East Ukraine are devastating. Passengers young and old lie dead in a field, personal belongings strewn around them. Do you need to see the body of an infant slaughtered at 33,000 feet? But, do you need to illustrate how horrific this incident is to ensure outrage is provoked and answers demanded? It is a difficult decision that every news organisation is having to deal with. Vice News' Simon Ostrovsky and his team have done well to tread the line in the attached report. It is tough to watch, but sometimes (maybe more often?) news should be.
