When I moved to Seattle 2 years ago, I was walking through Belltown and saw a sign for salsa classes with Jim Chow. I registered for class and its been a blast - I haven't stopped dancing since! :) Jim gave me a solid foundation in the dance and taught me a lot. He loves the dance, the community and his students: he cares a lot about the quality of learning and dancing that he helps to teach and promote. Not only does he teach; he also pulls his students into the dance community to help them expand their dancing by going outside the classroom to dance. He can be an exacting teacher because he cares about all the little details. The events at his studio are a blast! If you're just contemplating learning to dance salsa - stop and just come to his studio on Sunday's for practica to check things out. Its a friendly atmosphere with a great floor and space where everyone is dancing with everyone (Jim included) regardless of level.

Have been to a lot of classes and couldn't find a better studio or instructor. Jim at Belltown obviously loves what he does and enjoys bringing out the best salsa dancer in everyone. I've watched him work with seasoned performers and timid first-timers with the same level of enthusiasm and approachability. Loved the positive energy and level of experience here and all my friends did too. Thumbs up!!

I love it here!! I use to have a regular gym membership and take the zumba and kickboxing classes there but it just wasn't the same. First of all, it's not nearly as personalized. Those instructors do numerous classes a day, so I understand their reasoning for not knowing exactly who they are teaching and how to make them better, but it just wasn't for me. I love the individualized attention here, no matter who's instructing. I'm not a treadmill kind of girl so consider me a student for life!

Salsa classes with a helpful instructor! Jim Chow runs belltown dance studio and what fun! it is a great location right in belltown where you can learn a variety of latin dances: salsa, bachata, etc. as well as zumba. Jim is a very caring teacher and very welcoming and helpful. Come ready to learn and you're on your way!

End does not justify the means! Salsa, like many things worth doing in life requires hard work and dedication to master. You have to practice often to become good at it. But, in the process your paid teacher should not ridicule and humiliate you to "teach" a lesson. A truly passionate teacher should be able to inspire his students in a respectful way. I came to Jim Chow's class and had a great time during the first few classes. I then became one of his evangelists. Until the day I made a mistake that apparently warranted a two minute highly offensive and personal ridicule from Jim Chow in front of 30 other people. Yes, he makes sure everyone is watching your humiliation so that no one else dares to make the same mistake! Somehow he thinks this is a good teaching method. I've taken other salsa classes where the teacher would respectfully point out your mistakes (while reminding you to practice more often!). By feeling respected there I came to truly enjoy the salsa music and its culture, and to have fun while dancing. Jim Chow is an average dancer with very good marketing and business senses, but his teaching methods are subpar. His own dancing, while ok in a technical sense lacks the passion and naturality that true consummate salsa dancers show. In short, Jim Chow is more about the business than the art. Don't believe the marketing and the masochistic followers, there are other very respectful and significantly better instructors in Seattle.
