If you think that the proponents of "Tough on crime" are actually interested in reducing the crime rate and making our neighbourhoods safer, think again. privatizing prisons means that there is profit in crime. Reduce crime, reduce profit. This is immoral and all these people should be charged with conspiracy for every crime committed in that the encourage and facilitate all crime.
IF you think your politicians are looking out for you, you are sadly mistaken. More jail beds, guarantees of occupancy have never, will never make you safer. There are proven methods to reduce crime and increase safety. But these greedy profit seekers twist the facts and call these initiative "Soft on crime". Don't believe it, not for a second. Tough on crime legislation and initiatives may look it on the surface, but it is only upon a superficial look that they are tough. In the long run with no incentive to reduce crime and every incentive to increase it, these "Tough on crime" measures are really the soft on crime measures. Those who this ilk call soft on crime actually lead to a reduction in crime, making you safer.
Look at Stockton, CA. They had the highest murder rate in the nation. Then the city filed bankruptcy and laid off police officers, ceased plans for a new jail. yet they have reduced violent crime by 30% and murder is down by 50%. This was done in large part by the Cease Fire Program in conjunction with PICO National's Lifelines to Healing. These cooperative efforts organize the community to make changes. Changes that include job training, employment opportunities, counselling, etc.
