Looks like the sun is setting on G+ a little faster than expected; the Verge is saying April instead of August. I’m on Pluspora, but it’s unclear how active I’ll be there once G+ shuts down for non-enterprise users.

Things I need to set up and run simultaneously on my laptop for an exercise:
- Puppet (6 GB RAM)
- Gitlab (4 GB RAM)
- Nagios (2 GB RAM)
- Four web servers (two Linux, two Windows)
- Two databases (one Linux, one Windows)
- One load balancer

All whilst running my general work stuff as well.

My laptop has 16 GB of RAM installed.

Welp. So long, Apple. It was fun while it lasted...

(Yeah, I know those are recommended amounts of RAM, and that I can probably get away with a bit less. The general point, however, stands.)

Protip: if you're running a cheese grater Mac, try to upgrade its video card, and get no display after bootup - try a PRAM reset.

Mine is now rocking a Sapphire Pulse RX560, a significant upgrade from the original Radeon HD 5770.

This should see it through to the release of the 2019 Mac Pro, if not beyond, quite happily.

I'm a little surprised that macOS chose to include tools to allow the user to unpack RPM files, but it's remarkably useful.

But why did they have to put that code into tar, rather than having the more expected rpm2cpio or similar tool? ::sigh::

Protip: if you're running SATA drives off a SAS controller, you probably don't want to hang them off an expander.

SCSI bus resets galore.

It kinda works, but performance is... suboptimal. (For the task at hand, it's an acceptable tradeoff, but in the general case? Nope. Steer clear, is my advice.)

That feeling when somebody whinges about being rickrolled by a radio station, and you tell them to call and complain... giving them the number for the National Rick Astley Hotline.

(Yes, it's a thing. Call now. NZ: (09) 886 0565. Australia: (03) 8652 1453. UK: +44 (11) 7325 7425. US: +1 (760) 706 7425.)

That feeling when a band takes an old hit and re-arranges it... to something that completely changes the feeling of the original, whilst still being a brilliant piece of work in its own right.
