Terrible food, and horrible service. Work function w/ 11 people, the waitress was rude and obnoxious, continuously poking ppl on their shoulders to get their attention. Must have never heard of the phrase "Excuse me." Guess the built-in gratuity for a group of that size made her do the absolute minimum: take orders and bring food to the table. Plates were mixed up, folks got the wrong food, and when they offered to re-cook the food it took 1 hr to do so. Crab cake was more stuffing than crab, field salad was over-vinegar’ed and uneatable, salmon overcooked (WHICH chef manages to overcook salmon???) and overall the opinion of the ‘cheese cake’ for dessert was ‘nasty’. Wow.. Max Downtown, that was a bad experience. Love all the other Max’s but this one will not see me again.

The four of us came here on a Tuesday night. As usual, I didn't have cash on me for the valet, and when I asked if I could pay on the way out, the valet kept responding "on the way in." Okay... Once inside, we found the place to be pretty packed - despite having a reservation, we were asked to wait 15-20 minutes for our table. Each of us had our own entrees but split a couple of sides. Each item came out pretty slowly with quite the wait in between each. I had two of the Maryland jumbo crab cakes with radish tabasco aioli. With the aioli, the crab cakes were delicious. Without the aioli, the crab cakes were great, just not as great! As a table, we also had the roasted brussel sprouts, truffled potato tots, and asparagus with hollandaise. The centers of the tots are super hot - so be careful, or else your tongue will feel the consequences. Taste-wise, I'm sad to say they were so-so despite the truffle. Recommendation is to try the truffled fries instead. The brussel sprouts and the asparagus were good, but nothing to differentiate them from those at other restaurants. I wasn't at the table when we ordered the desserts, but they were perhaps the least exciting portion of the night's meal. They were plated beautifully but the flavors were dull and unoriginal. On the way out, there was no one in sight at the front desk to retrieve our checked coats. So, we helped ourselves to the coat closet and tipped ourselves.

what a great meal! the steaks were among the best we've had. the service was very good, and the sides, deserts and wine list were impressive. the wait staff was attentive and very knowledgeable without being pretentious. we'd highly recommend max downtown and will be returning.

I stopped by Max's for a quick lunch and had the Adobo grilled chicken wrap. It was excellent, as was the service - as always. I plan to come her this weekend and will try the marinated lamb loin - I saw someone get it and it looked delicious.

Best known as a surf and turf-style steakhouse, Max Downtown also distinguishes itself with a top-notch special gluten-free menu. The options are extensive and delicious. The server helped us pick out the best things to order with great wine pairing.

one of the few places worth visiting in hartford. not a knock out of the park restaurant but delivers a double every time.
